(Amendment)Glass in building - Product standard for structural and/or ultra-violet resistant sealant (for use with structural sealant glazing and/or insulating glass units with exposed seals)
Glass in building - Product standard for structural and/or ultra-violet resistant sealant (for use with structural sealant glazing and/or insulating glass units with exposed seals)
This European Standard covers the evaluation of conformity and the factory production control of sealant for the intrinsic capabilities when intended to apply for:
manufacturing of insulating glass units where ultra-violet resistance and/or mechanical resistance (structural use) of the insulating glass edge seal is required:
required level of resistance to UV exposure will depend on the degree of exposure to UV radiation with or without protection;
when the outer seal of the insulating glass has a structural function and/or is exposed to the UV radiation without any protection, only silicone based sealants are permitted;
when the outer seal of the insulating glass has no structural function and is protected from direct exposure to UV radiation, organic and silicone based sealants are permitted;
manufacturing of factory made structural sealant glazing elements when referred to by the relevant European Standards and ETAGs.
Only silicone based sealants are permitted;
assembling of glass products into or onto supports, where also ultra-violet resistance and/or mechanical resistance (structural use) of the seal is required under controlled environmental conditions as described in Clause 5 of EN 13022–2:2006.
Only silicone based sealants are permitted.
This European Standard also specifies requirements concerning seals and bonds of sealant in conformity with this European Standard.
When bonding of sealant to a non-glass substrate is tested, the substrate, which means the material, its treatment and its preparations for bonding, as applied or to be applied on the work is used in testing (coating of coated glass is considered as a non-glass substrate).
This European Standard contains other aspects of importance of trade.

Overview
EN 15434:2006/FprA1 is a CEN product standard for structural and/or ultra‑violet (UV) resistant sealants used in glass construction. It covers requirements, testing and conformity assessment for sealants intended for use with structural sealant glazing and/or insulating glass units (IGUs) with exposed seals. The standard defines performance expectations for UV resistance and mechanical (structural) capability and specifies factory production control (FPC) and evaluation of conformity for sealant manufacturers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of use: Sealants for
- Manufacturing IGUs where UV resistance and/or mechanical (structural) capability of the edge seal is required.
- Factory‑made structural sealant glazing elements (as referenced by relevant EN standards and ETAGs).
- Assembling glass into or onto supports under controlled environmental conditions (see EN 13022‑2:2006).
- Manufacturing IGUs where the outer seal is non‑structural and UV exposure is reduced (allowing organic or silicone sealants).
- Material restrictions
- Only silicone‑based sealants are permitted when the outer seal has a structural function or is exposed to UV without protection.
- Organic or silicone sealants may be used when the outer seal is non‑structural and UV exposure is reduced (e.g., UV‑blocking glass or durable opaque coverings).
- Testing & performance
- Specifies specimen preparation (generally 25 × 5 × 5 mm cross section; hot‑melt outer seal cross‑section 25 × 25 × 5 mm).
- Ageing requirement example: ratio (R) of stress after/before ageing at rupture R ≥ 30% for Level A in Annex D.
- When testing bonding to non‑glass substrates, the actual substrate (material and surface treatment) as used in practice must be tested; coated glass counts as a non‑glass substrate.
- Quality control: Defines factory production control and conformity assessment procedures for sealant production.
Applications and practical value
- Ensures reliable performance of sealants in insulating glass units, structural glazing façades, and glazing assemblies where UV exposure and load transfer are critical.
- Useful for sealant manufacturers, IGU and façade fabricators, test laboratories, certification bodies, architects and specifiers seeking compliant sealant selection and documentation.
- Helps reduce failures related to UV degradation and mechanical loss of adhesion in exposed edge seals.
