Overview
EN ISO 3325:1999/A1:2002 is an amendment to ISO 3325:1996 that adds a precision statement for the determination of transverse rupture strength (TRS) of sintered metal materials, excluding hardmetals. The amendment clarifies expected measurement variability by giving repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R) limits for representative powder‑metallurgy compositions and refers users to additional guidance (MPIF Standard 41:1998).
Key topics
- Scope: TRS testing of sintered metal materials (hardmetals excluded).
- Precision statement: Defines statistical limits for measurement repeatability (same laboratory, same conditions) and reproducibility (between different laboratories) at a 95% expectation level.
- Example data: Table 1 in the amendment provides sample TRS mean values and associated r and R (in N/mm2) for typical compositions, for example:
- Iron with 0.5% combined carbon - mean TRS ≈ 490 N/mm2, r = 38, R = 97
- Iron with 2% Cu, 0.8% combined carbon - mean TRS ≈ 990 N/mm2, r = 86, R = 145
- Heat‑treated iron with 2% Ni, 0.5% combined carbon - mean TRS ≈ 1320 N/mm2, r = 163, R = 279
- Statistical interpretation: Laboratories can expect their repeated measurements to fall within r 95% of the time; results between different labs are expected to agree within R 95% of the time.
- References: Additional material details and test practice are cross‑referenced to MPIF Standard 41:1998.
Applications
- Quality control and acceptance testing of powder‑metallurgy (PM) parts and sintered components.
- Material specification and supplier verification where TRS is a performance criterion.
- R&D and process development to quantify variability of TRS for different alloying and heat‑treatment conditions.
- Interlaboratory test programs and accreditation activities that require documented precision data.
Who uses this standard
- Metallurgical and materials engineers working with sintered metals.
- Third‑party mechanical testing and calibration laboratories.
- Manufacturers of powder‑metallurgy components and component suppliers.
- Standards bodies and QA teams establishing inspection and contract test criteria.
