Overview
EN ISO 463:2006 - Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) - Dimensional measuring equipment - Design and metrological characteristics of mechanical dial gauges - specifies the principal design and metrological requirements for mechanical dial gauges. It defines general construction, dimensional interchangeability, dial and pointer behaviour, contact elements, zero adjustment, limit indicators, and the metrological parameters manufacturers must declare and calibrate to demonstrate conformance.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and intent: Specifies the most important design and metrological characteristics of mechanical dial gauges to ensure consistent performance and interchangeability across manufacturers.
- Design characteristics:
- Dimensional requirements (referenced Figures and Table 1) to ensure interchangeability (bezel sizes, stem diameter, clamp options, etc.).
- Dial and pointer layout and behavior (scale interval and units clearly marked, clockwise pointer movement, pre‑span and post‑span requirements for multiple and partial revolutions).
- Revolution counting devices - requirements for correct indication per revolution.
- Contact element - must be replaceable and wear resistant.
- Zero adjustment - reliable resetting means that resists unintentional displacement (clamp or frictional device).
- Movable limit indicators - must not impair scale visibility.
- Manufacturer-specified data (minimum information set such as width, thickness, measuring range, scale interval, mounting, IP protection, plunger shock protection).
- Metrological characteristics:
- Manufacturer shall specify MPE (Maximum Permissible Error) and MPL (Maximum Permissible Limit) for key metrological characteristics.
- Static response requirements (hysteresis and repeatability) and measuring forces are addressed.
- Conformance and calibration:
- Guidance on proving conformance, calibration standards and measurement uncertainty (see clauses on calibration and Annex C).
- Informative annexes provide example error diagrams and sample data sheets.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Gauge manufacturers - design and document dial gauge mechanical and metrological features to meet GPS requirements.
- Calibration and metrology laboratories - establish calibration procedures, specify MPE/MPL, and demonstrate conformance.
- Quality, inspection and production engineers - select appropriate dial gauges for dimensional inspection, ensure interchangeability and traceability.
- Procurement and compliance teams - verify supplier declarations and equipment specifications against the standard.
- Standards bodies and test houses - harmonize national standards and conformity assessment based on the EN ISO adoption.

ISO 463:2006(E) iv © ISO 2006 – All rights reserved Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 463 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 213, Dimensional and geometrical product specifications and verification. This first edition of ISO 463 cancels and replaces ISO/R 463:1965, which has been technically revised. SIST EN ISO 463:2006
