Overview

EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022 is the latest amendment to the European standard specifying the interfaces for the Type LC fibre optic connector family. Published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) in August 2022, this standard aligns with the international IEC 61754-20:2012/AMD1:2022 document. It defines the physical and intermateable characteristics of LC connector interfaces used in fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.

The update aims to ensure uniformity and compatibility in fibre optic connections by detailing interfaces for simplex, duplex, and quad configurations, covering physical contact (PC), angled physical contact (APC), and plastic optical fibre (POF) connectors of different diameters. EN 61754-20 supports consistent design and implementation across global fibre optic networks.

Key Topics

  • Connector Interfaces Included:

    • Simplex and duplex plug connectors with PC and APC 8° ferrules.
    • POF connectors accommodating 1 mm and 1.25 mm outer diameter fibres.
    • Quad plug, adaptor, and active device receptacle interfaces.
  • Types of Endfaces:

    • Spherically polished non-angled (PC) for low back reflection.
    • Angled physical contact (APC) with an 8° angle to further reduce back reflections.
    • Flat smooth endfaces for POF connectors.
  • Intermateability Tables:

    • Comprehensive tables detail which plugs mate with various adaptors and receptacles across all interface types.
    • Plug-to-plug intermateability guidance ensures correct and efficient connector pairing.
  • Mechanical and Dimensional Details:

    • Precise illustrations and tables specify connector dimensions and component layouts.
    • Includes details for ferrule diameters, mating sleeves, and cable jacket accommodations.
  • Standard Versioning and Application:

    • Amendment A1 updates and clarifies key connector interface details without changing fundamental dimensional requirements.
    • National committees from CENELEC member countries are required to adopt the amendment by May 2023 and withdraw conflicting standards by August 2025.

Applications

  • Telecommunications Infrastructure: EN 61754-20 interfaces support critical fibre optic links in broadband access, metro, and long-haul networks, ensuring reliable and low-loss connections.

  • Data Centers and Enterprise Networks: The standard facilitates the deployment of high-density LC connectors in patch panels, switches, and active equipment, optimizing space and performance.

  • Optical Active Devices: Specialized receptacle interfaces enable seamless integration with transceivers, optical amplifiers, and other fibre optic active components.

  • Plastic Optical Fibre Systems: POF connector interfaces under the standard address applications in automotive, consumer electronics, and short-range communication systems where PVC-jacketed fibres are used.

  • Test and Measurement Equipment: Standardized connector dimensions and intermateability ensure compatibility with fibre optic test instruments and monitoring devices.

Related Standards

  • EN 61754 Series: Covers a wide range of fibre optic connector families such as SC, ST, FC, and MU, providing a holistic framework for interconnection interfaces.

  • IEC 61753: Specifies performance and environmental testing standards for fibre optic interconnecting devices, complementing connector dimension standards like EN 61754-20.

  • ISO/IEC 11801: International standard for generic cabling, integrating fibre optic connector interfaces for structured cabling systems.

  • IEC 61300: Defines fibre optic interconnection components' test procedures, frequently used alongside EN 61754 standards for quality assurance.

Summary

EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022 defines the mechanical and interface requirements for the widely adopted Type LC fibre optic connector family, including simplex, duplex, quad, and POF variants. It ensures consistent physical compatibility and intermateability for diverse fibre optic applications across Europe and globally. This standard is essential for manufacturers, system integrators, and network operators to guarantee reliable fibre optic connections with minimal optical loss and back reflection.

By adhering to EN 61754-20, stakeholders benefit from greater system interoperability, streamlined installation, and enhanced network performance in communication, data center, and industrial fibre optic solutions.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they
