This international standard specifies a method, carried out under standard conditions, for preparing and storing a sample so that its pot-life may by assessed by measuring a particular property.

Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren zum Vorbereiten und Lagern einer Probe eines Mehrkomponenten-Beschichtungsstoffes und anschließenden Bestimmen der Verarbeitungszeit unter Normbedingungen fest. Die Verarbeitungszeit wird durch Messen einer oder mehrerer spezifischen/r Eigenschaft(en) beurteilt.
Bei reaktiven Beschichtungsstoffen, die innerhalb kurzer Zeit, z. B. 3 h, aushärten, liegt das Ende der Verarbeitungszeit so nahe am Gelpunkt, dass diese spezielle Eigenschaft nach ISO 2535 geprüft wird.
Spezielle "Niedrigtemperatur"-Beschichtungsstoffe sind bei einer festgelegten niedrigeren Temperatur zu prüfen, welche die Bedingungen, unter denen sie in der Praxis verwendet werden, widerspiegeln. Zusätzlich kann es gefordert sein, die Verarbeitungszeit bei einer festgelegten Temperatur oder bei Temperaturen, die den Bereich umfassen, in dem ein Beschichtungsstoff verarbeitet wird, zu bestimmen.
Das Verfahren kann durchgeführt werden entweder als ja/nein-Prüfung durch Bestimmen der spezifischen Eigenschaft(en) nach einer festgelegten Zeitdauer oder als Bestimmung der Verarbeitungszeit durch mehrmalige Wiederholung der Prüfung in geeigneten Zeitabständen.
Diese Internationale Norm ist nicht für eine "Baustellen"-Kontrolle von Beschichtungsstoffen während ihrer Verarbeitung, sondern für die Ermittlung der Verarbeitungszeit im Laboratorium vorgesehen.
ANMERKUNG Der nach diesem Verfahren erhaltene Eigenschaftswert kann vom Lieferanten aus praktischen Gründen näher bestimmt werden (z. B. Starttemperatur) und sollte dann für Verbraucherhinweise "praktische Verarbeitungszeit" genannt werden.

L'ISO 9514:2005 décrit une méthode, exécutée dans des contions normalisées, pour la préparation et le stockage d'un échantillon d'un système de revêtement multicomposants en vue d'évaluer son délai maximal d'utilisation après mélange par mesurage d'une ou de plusieurs propriétés particulières.
La méthode peut être mise en pratique, soit sous forme d'un essai de conformité/non-conformité par détermination de la ou des propriétés données après un temps spécifié, soit sous forme de détermination du délai maximal d'utilisation par répétition des déterminations à des intervalles de temps qui conviennent.
L'ISO 9514:2005 n'est pas destinée au contrôle «in situ» des produits lors de leur application. Elle est destinée à déterminer le «délai maximal d'utilisation après mélange» en laboratoire.

and varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 "Paints and varnishes", the

This document supersedes EN ISO 9514:1994.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2005, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by October 2005.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 9514 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9,
General test methods for paints and varnishes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 9514:1992). In this new edition, a conditioning
chamber is used instead of a block of polystyrene. The latter can be used as an option for determining the pot
life under near-adiabatic conditions. The table in Annex B detailing liquid systems and the possible tests that
can be used to determine pot life has been expanded.

1 Scope
This International Standard describes a method, carried out under standard conditions, for preparing and
storing a sample of a multicomponent coating system and subsequently assessing its pot life by measuring a
particular property/ies.
Reactive systems curing within a short period of time, e.g. 3 h, will have the end of their pot life so near to the
gel point that they will need to be tested for that particular property in accordance with ISO 2535.
Special “low temperature” grade systems will need to be tested at a lower specified temperature to reflect the
conditions under which they will be used in practice. Additionally, it can be a requirement to determine pot life
at a specified temperature or temperatures in order to cover a range of practical conditions under which a
paint will be used.
