Overview
EN 15416-5:2025 - published by CEN - is a laboratory test method for adhesives for load-bearing timber structures (other than phenolic and aminoplastic). The standard defines a repeatable procedure to determine the minimum pressing time under referenced conditions for glue line thicknesses close contact, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. It is intended to provide a reliable basis for comparing minimum pressing times between adhesives, while noting that test results alone cannot be directly applied to safe production without accounting for real-world variations (timber density, factory temperature, RH, etc.).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and objectives: Determine minimum pressing time for adhesives used in timber structures at specified glue line thicknesses and referenced conditions (temperature and wood moisture).
- Test materials: Standard beech lap joints or individual single lap joint pieces for very fast-setting adhesives.
- Referenced conditions:
- Wood moisture contents: (9 ± 1) %, (12 ± 1) %, (15 ± 1) %.
- Test temperatures: nominally 15 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C (with required climate control).
- Glue line thicknesses: close contact (≤0.1 mm), 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm.
- Performance criterion: The method identifies the shortest pressing time that achieves a minimum tensile shear strength (see Clause 4 principle - tensile shear ≥ 4 N/mm under referenced conditions).
- Apparatus and procedure: Climate cabinets for conditioning, testing machine capable of constant rate loading (≈2.0 kN/min or ISO 5893 crosshead control), panel preparation, cutting and processing times, and a defined calculation method for minimum pressing time (updated in 2025 edition).
- Definitions and clarifications: Distinguishes pressing time from curing time; introduces provisions for preparing individual test pieces; updated calculation procedure compared with EN 15416-5:2017.
Applications and users
Who uses EN 15416-5:2025:
- Adhesive manufacturers developing or comparing timber adhesives (PUR, EPI and others covered by EN 15416 series).
- Materials/test laboratories performing quality control, R&D and type testing.
- Timber product manufacturers (finger-jointing, glued laminated timber) optimizing press cycles and glue line specifications.
- Certification bodies and standards committees verifying performance under referenced conditions.
Practical uses:
- Comparative bench-marking of minimum pressing time across adhesive formulations.
- Supporting product datasheets, manufacturing process design, and laboratory-based process optimization.
- Informing but not replacing factory validation - results must be adjusted for production variables before use in safe manufacture.
