Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-81:2023/A11:2024 is a key European Standard focusing on the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, specifically electric foot warmers and heating mats. With a rated voltage of not more than 250 V, this standard addresses the particular safety requirements essential to protect users in domestic environments. Published by CLC and approved by CENELEC, it updates and supplements the previous editions to align with current safety expectations.

This amendment A11 modifies EN IEC 60335-2-81:2023, reflecting the latest technical measures on hazards, marking, and usage guidance, emphasizing protection for vulnerable users such as children and persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities. The standard is critical for manufacturers, designers, and safety assessors who need to ensure compliance and promote safe electric foot warming products.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
The standard applies to electric foot warmers and heating mats intended for household and similar use with rated voltages up to 250 V. It focuses on foreseeable hazards but does not cover misuse by very young children or unsupervised usage by children.

  • Safety Requirements
It outlines strict criteria for electrical safety, mechanical integrity, and thermal performance to avoid risks such as electric shock, burns, and fire.

  • User Instructions and Marking
The amendment clarifies marking requirements, stating appliances may be used by children aged 3 years and older and persons with reduced capabilities if supervised or instructed on safe use. It mandates keeping the appliance and cord out of reach of children under 3 years.

  • Normative References
It integrates related European standards for appliance couplers (EN IEC 60320 series) and material hardness (EN ISO 2439), ensuring components meet harmonized safety benchmarks.

  • Annex Modifications
The annexes supplement Part 1 standards with additions that are essential for detailed technical adjustments and normative references relevant to foot warmers and heating mats.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-81:2023/A11:2024 is indispensable for:

  • Manufacturers producing electric foot warmers and heating mats by providing clear safety criteria and marking guidance to ensure market approval and user safety.
  • Product Designers and Engineers to incorporate up-to-date safety features and compliance with voltage limits and user protection considerations.
  • Quality and Compliance Auditors verifying that appliances meet European safety directives and harmonized standards for household electrical heaters.
  • Consumer Safety Organizations evaluating risks associated with foot warming devices and promoting usage guidelines that protect sensitive user groups.
  • Regulatory Bodies implementing and endorsing national standards that align with CENELEC requirements by the set deadlines for national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards.

Related Standards

This amendment works in conjunction with:

  • EN 60335-1 series - General safety requirements for household electrical appliances.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-81:2023 and its previous amendments - Main document covering foot warmers and heating mats.
  • EN IEC 60320 series - Appliance couplers standards for general purpose electrical connectors used in household appliances.
  • EN ISO 2439 - Standard for determining hardness of flexible cellular polymeric materials, relevant for components in heating mats.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-17 and EN IEC 60335-2-71 - Standards covering safety for electric blankets and other similar electrical heating devices.
