Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Underlays for discontinuous roof coverings - Artificial ageing procedure
This document specifies a procedure for artificial ageing of flexible underlays which are used under discontinuous roof coverings. This is achieved by exposing test samples to UV-radiation, elevated temperature in combination with high relative humidity and elevated temperature in combination with accelerated air-speed.

General Information
Overview
SIST EN 17872:2024 is a European standard specifying an artificial ageing procedure for flexible sheets used as underlays in discontinuous roof coverings. Developed by CEN/TC 254, this standard defines a method to simulate the long-term weathering effects experienced by roofing underlays during installation and service life. It focuses on replicating exposure to UV radiation, elevated temperature combined with high relative humidity, and elevated temperature combined with accelerated air-speed (ventilation).
The standard aims to assess the durability and performance of waterproofing underlays by evaluating their resistance to water penetration and their mechanical properties before and after artificial ageing. SIST EN 17872:2024 is intended to complement the harmonized standard EN 13859-1 and facilitates consistent testing across European markets.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
Defines artificial ageing procedures designed to simulate the climatic stresses underlays face during roof installation (UV exposure) and long-term service (humidity and temperature cycles, ventilated heat exposure).Artificial Ageing Procedure
- Continuous UV-A irradiation with elevated temperature (black standard temperature of 50 °C for 336 hours).
- Followed by 12 weeks at 70 °C and 90% relative humidity to mimic hydrolytic and oxidative effects.
- Lastly, 12 weeks at 70 °C in a ventilated oven with air speed between 0.25–0.75 m/s to replicate drying and airflow conditions.
Test Specimen Preparation and Conditioning
- Specimens are cut larger than required test dimensions to avoid edge effects and trimmed post-ageing.
- Sets are prepared for both exposed and unexposed conditions for comparison.
- Specimens are marked to indicate machine direction and orientation.
Apparatus Requirements
- UV-A exposure chamber without water spray.
- Climate chamber providing high humidity and controlled temperature without metallic contact.
- Ventilated oven with controlled airflow and temperature capable of maintaining air exchange rates and air speeds.
Testing Parameters
- Water penetration resistance.
- Tensile strength and elongation at maximum force.
- Visual inspection for aging effects using standard definitions (EN 1850-1, EN 1850-2).
Reporting
- Detailed documentation of product identification, test conditions, visual observations, mechanical and water resistance results before and after ageing.

Introduction
During its time on the roof, a discontinuous roofing underlay is exposed to different climatic conditions.
During installation, whilst the roof is open prior to application of the primary covering, the underlay is
exposed to UV and direct weathering. After completion of the roof, the underlay is subject to long term
oxidation and hydrolysis, being exposed to elevated temperatures in combination with high relative
humidity and accelerated air-speed due to wind-driven and thermally-driven air flows. The method
described in this document is designed to simulate these relevant exposures, which affect the durability
of an underlay.
This document is an additional voluntary artificial ageing test procedure that is intended to be
incorporated into the harmonized standard EN 13859-1:2010 at a future revision.
