Overview

The draft European Standard oSIST prEN 15004-8:2015 outlines specific requirements for fixed firefighting systems using the IG-100 gas extinguishing agent. Developed by CEN Technical Committee TC 191, this standard focuses on the physical properties, system design, usage, and safety considerations of gas extinguishing systems employing IG-100. Applicable to systems at nominal pressures of 160, 200, and 300 bar (measured at 15 °C), it provides critical guidelines to ensure effective fire suppression while prioritizing safety and environmental sustainability.

IG-100 is a colourless, odourless, electrically non-conductive inert gas with physical characteristics close to air density, primarily extinguishing fires by reducing oxygen concentration in protected volumes. The standard complements other parts of EN 15004, dedicating attention specifically to IG-100 while facilitating design consistency across different gas extinguishing agents.

Key Topics

  • Physical Properties of IG-100
    IG-100 is nitrogen based with:

    • Purity ≥ 99.6% by volume
    • Low moisture and oxygen content
    • Boiling point at −195.8 °C
    • Density similar to air, making it easy to handle and store
These properties influence system pressure requirements and agent volume calculation.
  • System Design Parameters
    Design factors covered include:

    • Fill pressures: 200 bar and 300 bar nominal storage pressure at 15 °C, with maximum working pressures defined to safely handle temperature variations.
    • Extinguishing agent quantity: Minimum agent volume is calculated based on design concentration tables, ensuring effective fire suppression with a safety factor of 1.3 applied to extinguishing concentrations.
    • No superpressurization: Containers storing IG-100 are not superpressurized, simplifying handling and compliance.
  • Application Scope and Fire Classes
IG-100 total flooding systems are suitable for extinguishing fires classified across all classes as per EN 15004-1. Specific reference extinguishing concentrations are given for fuels such as heptane (Class B) and various Class A surface materials.

  • Personnel Safety Considerations
IG-100 reduces oxygen levels to extinguish fires, which poses a potential hazard to occupants if not managed properly. The standard includes physiological safety thresholds such as:

    • No Observed Adverse Effect Level (NOAEL) at 43% IG-100 volume
    • Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level (LOAEL) at 52% IG-100 volume
These values assist in safe system design to minimize health risks during discharge.
  • Environmental Impact
As an inert gas, IG-100 has zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), making it an environmentally responsible choice for fire protection.

Applications

  • Industrial and Commercial Fire Protection
IG-100 systems are ideal for protecting sensitive equipment rooms, data centers, museums, and archives where water-based firefighting systems could cause damage.

  • Total Flooding Fire Extinguishing Systems
Suitable for enclosed hazard volumes requiring rapid fire suppression using gaseous agents that do not leave residue.

  • High-Pressure Gas Storage Environments
Designed for systems operating at elevated pressures (up to 300 bar), ensuring agent availability and system responsiveness in diverse temperature conditions.

  • Environmentally Sensitive Sites
Due to its inert nature and no impact on climate or ozone layer, IG-100 is preferred in applications where environmental regulations are stringent.

Related Standards

  • EN 15004-1: Fixed firefighting systems - General requirements
Provides overarching terms, definitions, and performance principles for gaseous fire extinguishing systems.

  • EN 15004 Parts 2 to 10
Cover other gaseous extinguishing agents including FK-5-1-12, HCFC Blend A, HFC variants, IG-01, IG-55, and IG-541, providing complementary physical and design data.

  • EN 15001-1: Safety requirements for fire extinguishing systems
Details minimum safety standards for personnel protection during system operation.

  • Relevant international standards on fire suppression agent testing and system maintenance may also complement oSIST prEN 15004-8:2015.
