Overview

EN 3719:2025 - Aerospace series - Aluminium or aluminium alloy conductors for electrical cables - Product standard is a CEN/ASD-STAN specification for stranded aluminium conductors used in aerospace electrical cables. Approved in June 2025 and superseding EN 3719:2018, it defines materials, dimensions, linear resistance, mechanical characteristics, conductor construction and mass for nominal cross-sections 5 mm² to 115 mm² inclusive.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Materials: Conductors must use annealed aluminium AW‑1110 (Al 99.1) or specified aluminium alloys with chemical limits referenced to EN 573‑3+A2 and EN 1715‑2.
  • Electrical and mechanical limits:
    • Maximum resistivity: 3.0 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m (≈ 30 Ω·m/km).
    • Strand elongation: ≥ 10%.
    • Strand tensile strength: ≥ 105 MPa.
  • Plating options and codes:
    • Code A: unplated aluminium alloy
    • Code B: tin plated
    • Code C: silver plated (min 1.0 µm)
    • Code D: nickel plated (min 1.0 µm)
  • Construction and dimensions:
    • Applies to stranded conductors with strand diameters shown for specific constructions (examples include strand Ø 0.51 mm and 0.37 mm).
    • Lay length rules: outer-layer lay typically 8× to 16× conductor diameter; larger sectional areas limited to ≤ 30× for basic concentric/bunched conductors.
    • Joints: only butt joints; distance between strand joints must exceed 3 m.
    • Compaction: plated conductors must not have plating-damaging compaction; unplated may be compacted (minimum compaction rate 95%).
  • Mass, resistance and dimensional tables: Nominal resistance (Ω/km) and mass (kg/km) are specified per cross‑section in Tables 2 and 3 of the standard.
  • Testing and quality assurance:
    • Test methods refer to the EN 3475 series (visual, mass, dimensions, ohmic resistance, tensile, plating tests, solderability).
    • Quality assurance per EN 9133.

Applications and who uses EN 3719:2025

  • Intended for manufacturers of aerospace electrical cables and conductors, OEMs, harness suppliers, aerospace electrical engineers, procurement and qualification laboratories.
  • Practical uses: design and production of aircraft and spacecraft cable cores and power distribution conductors where aluminium (lighter than copper) is required with defined electrical/mechanical performance and traceable production/testing practices.

Related standards

  • EN 573‑3+A2 (Aluminium chemical composition)
  • EN 1715‑2 (Drawing stock for electrical applications)
  • EN 3475 series (cable test methods: Parts 100, 201, 202, 203, 301, 418, 505–509)
  • EN 9133 (Quality management and product qualification)

EN 3719:2025 is essential when specifying or procuring aluminium conductor cores for aerospace electrical cables to ensure compliance with harmonized European aerospace product requirements.
