Overview - EN 3475-514:2014 (Porosity of copper cladding on aluminium strands)

EN 3475-514:2014 is a CEN aerospace test method that specifies how to assess porosity of copper cladding on copper‑clad aluminium strands and on nickel‑ or silver‑coated copper‑clad aluminium conductors. The standard is intended for use together with EN 3475-100 (general test methods) and supersedes the 2007 edition. It defines specimen preparation, the acid immersion inspection method and the acceptance requirement (visual detection of bubbles) to determine whether copper cladding has defects that expose the aluminium core.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to copper‑clad aluminium wire or strand (all classes as per ASTM B 566) and to nickel or silver coated variants (ASTM B 298, ASTM B 355 referenced).
  • Specimen size and handling:
    • Specimen length: 2.30 m ± 10%.
    • Do not touch test surfaces with bare fingers; surface must be free of oil/contaminants.
    • Cleaning: wipe with lint‑free material and an organic solvent (example: alcohol/ether 50/50).
    • To limit curvature stress, wrap strand samples on a mandrel (40 mm) or wind stranded conductors around a diameter ≈ 200× strand diameter; remove ends from windings for ~0.15 m.
  • Test method:
    • The central ~2 m of the specimen is immersed (ends must remain out of solution) in a pure hydrochloric acid solution of density 1.088 g/cm3 at 20 °C.
    • Immersion procedure and times are specified separately for single strands and complete conductors (see clause 5 of the standard).
    • During immersion, inspect visually for bubbling caused by acid contacting exposed aluminium.
  • Acceptance criterion:
    • No bubbles shall rise from the specimen surface to the solution surface. Visible adherent bubbles alone are not conclusive evidence of porosity - the test focuses on actively rising bubbles indicating reaction with aluminium.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses:
    • Incoming inspection and quality control of aerospace electrical cables and conductors.
    • Process control during copper cladding and coating manufacture.
    • Failure analysis and root‑cause evaluation of conductor surface defects.
  • Typical users:
    • Cable and conductor manufacturers, aerospace OEMs and subcontractors, independent testing laboratories, quality assurance and materials engineers in the aerospace and defence sectors.

Related standards

  • EN 3475-100 (general test methods) - to be used together with EN 3475-514.
  • ASTM B 566 (copper‑clad aluminium wire classification), ASTM B 298 (silver coated copper wire), ASTM B 355 (nickel coated copper wire) - normative references cited by the standard.
