ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the criteria for acceptance, prior to installation, of clay flue liners and chimney pots used for conveying hot gases in masonry chimneys. The liners and pots shall be manufactured from fire clay, shale, surface clay, or a combination of these materials that when formed and fired to suitable temperatures, shall yield a product that is strong, durable, serviceable, and conforms to this specification. The liners and pots shall be subjected to absorption, acid resistance, and freeze-thaw cycle tests.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the criteria for acceptance, prior to installation, of clay flue liners and chimney pots used for conveying hot gases in masonry chimneys.

6.1.3 If any of the test specimens fail to meet the requirements, the manufacturer shall be allowed to retest on two additional
specimens for each one that failed. The flues and pots will be acceptable if all the subsequent specimens for retest meet the
requirements.
6.2 Acid Resistance:
6.2.1 This is a test used to determine the resistance of clay flue liners and chimney pots to the action of acids encountered in
chimneys. This test shall be performed only when specified.
6.2.2 The flue liner and chimney pots shall be acceptable if the acid soluble material does not exceed 0.25 % when tested in
accordance with Test Methods C301.
6.2.3 Test Specimens—Select one test specimen from each size of flue liner or chimney pot. The specimens shall measure about
2 by 2 in. (51 by 51 mm) per side and weigh not more than 200 g. They shall be sound pieces with all edges freshly broken, free
of cracks or shattered edges, and shall be thoroughly cleaned.
6.3 Freeze-Thaw Cycle Test:
6.3.1 When flue liners or chimney pots are tested in accordance with Test Methods C67, Section 9 on structural clay tile, there
shall be no breakage and the percentage of weight loss shall not exceed 0.5 %.

Standard Guide for Design and Construction of Brick Liners for Industrial Chimneys

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 History:  
4.1.1 For many years, brick liners have been used with an excellent record of performance. For the most part, however, the design and construction of brick liners has been based on past industry practice due to the lack of available information and knowledge of the physical properties of the brick and mortar, the thermal and seismic behavior of brick liners, and many related characteristics that were not properly or accurately defined.  
4.1.2 The use of scrubbers, which lower gas temperatures and introduce highly corrosive condensates into the flue gas system, requires many new design considerations. The effect that scrubbers have on brick liners is an ongoing area of study, since a number of liners have experienced growth- and deflection-related problems which may be attributable, at least in part, to nonuniform temperature and moisture conditions within the liners.  
4.2 Purpose—The recommendations contained herein represent current industry practices and serve to define the pertinent considerations that should be followed in the design and construction of brick chimney liners.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers procedures for the design, construction, and serviceability of brick liners for industrial chimneys. The structural design criteria are applicable to vertical masonry cantilever structures supported only at their base, either by a foundation, a concrete pedestal, or by some means from the outer concrete shell. Excluded from direct consideration are single-wythe, sectional brick linings that are supported on a series of corbels cast in the outer chimney shell.

Standard Test Method for Drying Shrinkage of Mortar Containing Hydraulic Cement

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method establishes a selected set of conditions of temperature, relative humidity and rate of evaporation of the environment to which a mortar specimen of stated composition shall be subjected for a specified period of time during which its change in length is determined and designated “drying shrinkage.”  
4.2 The drying shrinkage of mortar as determined by this test method has a linear relation to the drying shrinkage of concrete made with the same cement and exposed to the same drying conditions.4 Hence this test method may be used when it is desired to develop data on the effect of a hydraulic cement on the drying shrinkage of concrete made with that cement.

1.1 This test method determines the change in length on drying of mortar bars containing hydraulic cement and graded standard sand.

Standard Test Method for Determination of Draindown Characteristics in Uncompacted Asphalt Mixtures

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method can be used to determine whether the amount of draindown measured for a given asphalt mixture is within specified acceptable levels. The test provides an evaluation of the draindown potential of an asphalt mixture during mixture design and/or during field production. This test is primarily used for mixtures with high coarse aggregate content such as porous asphalt (open-graded friction course) and stone matrix asphalt (SMA).
Note 1: The quality of the results produced by this standard are dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Specification D3666 alone does not completely ensure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or some similar acceptable guideline provides a means of evaluating and controlling some of those factors.
