Standard Test Method for Gaskets for Use in Connection with Hub and Spigot Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings for Sanitary Drain, Waste, Vent, and Storm Piping Applications
ABSTRACT
This test method covers the standard material criteria and test method for compression gaskets used in joining hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings for sanitary drain, waste, vent, and storm piping applications. The gaskets shall be made of a compound containing a thermoset elastomer and shall consist of one or more sealing ring(s) that compress to provide an airtight and watertight seal. Compression gaskets shall have an integral flange to prevent the gasket from rolling into the hub during installation and shall be designed to permit expansion, contraction, and deflection of assembled piping. The gaskets shall be restrained and subjected to hydrostatic pressure and the joint assembly performance shall be evaluated using the restrained hydrostatic joint testing apparatus wherein a water pressure gauge is used to ensure the accuracy of the test pressures.
SCOPE
1.1 Several different types of compression gaskets are available for use in connection with hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings. The purpose of this test method is to establish material criteria and test procedures for compression gaskets used in joining hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings for sanitary drain, waste, vent, and storm drain piping applications in accordance with the general needs of producers, distributors, and users.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM C1563-08(2021) establishes the standard test method for evaluating compression gaskets designed for use with hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings. These gaskets are a critical component in the assembly of sanitary drain, waste, vent, and storm piping systems. The test method outlined in this standard sets material and performance criteria for gaskets to ensure reliable, leak-resistant connections in plumbing and drainage applications.
This standard is developed by ASTM International in accordance with globally recognized principles, as outlined by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee. It is intended for use by manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, and end users to verify gasket performance and compliance.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Covers multiple types of compression gaskets used for joining hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings in sanitary waste and stormwater systems.
- Material Requirements: Gaskets must be composed of a compound containing a thermoset elastomer, with integral flanges to enhance installation and sealing.
- Testing Procedure: Utilizes a restrained hydrostatic joint test to measure air and water-tightness of gasketed pipe joints under controlled hydrostatic pressure.
- Marking Requirements: Each gasket must be clearly marked with essential information, such as pipe size, class, ASTM designations, country of origin, manufacturer, and year of manufacture, ensuring traceability.
- Inspection and Sampling: Requires manufacturers to conduct regular inspections and maintain detailed records to support certification and quality assurance.
- Safety and Compliance: Users are responsible for adhering to appropriate safety, health, and environmental regulations relevant to the application of these gaskets.
Applications
The ASTM C1563-08(2021) test method is highly relevant for:
- Plumbing Systems: Ensuring secure and durable joints in sanitary drain, waste, and vent piping systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
- Stormwater and Sewer Lines: Providing reliable seals in cast iron piping systems managing stormwater runoff and municipal wastewater.
- Product Compliance and Quality Control: Enabling manufacturers and suppliers to validate the performance, integrity, and compliance of compression gaskets before field installation.
- Infrastructure Projects: Supporting engineers and contractors in building code-compliant drainage and piping infrastructure.
Using gaskets that comply with ASTM C1563-08(2021) assures robust joint performance, minimizes the risk of leaks, and extends the service life of cast iron piping systems.
Related Standards
Professionals working with hub and spigot cast iron soil pipe and fittings should be familiar with the following related ASTM standards:
- ASTM A74: Specification for Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings - Defines dimensional and physical requirements for piping and fitting materials referenced in the gasket test method.
- ASTM C564: Specification for Rubber Gaskets for Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings - Specifies the requirements for elastomeric gaskets used with cast iron soil pipe.
- ASTM A644: Terminology Relating to Iron Castings - Provides key definitions for terms used throughout ASTM standards dealing with iron castings and related components.
By following these standards in conjunction with ASTM C1563-08(2021), manufacturers and project stakeholders can ensure compatibility, safety, and regulatory compliance in drainage and storm piping applications.
