Standard Specification for Ferrochrome-Silicon

ABSTRACT
This specification covers ferrochrome-silicon of Grades A and B. Chemical analysis shall be performed wherein specimens shall conform to required chemical composition of chromium, carbon, silicon, sulfur, phosphorus, nitrogen, manganese, nickel, vanadium, copper, molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, cobalt, aluminum, titanium, zirconium, arsenic, lead, tin, zinc, boron, antimony, silver, and bismuth.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers several grades of ferrochrome-silicon.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.2.1 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply.
1.2.2 Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A482/A482M-11(2021): Standard Specification for Ferrochrome-Silicon establishes the requirements for ferrochrome-silicon alloys, widely used in steelmaking and other metallurgical processes. Developed by ASTM International, this standard defines the chemical composition, size, and tolerances for Grades A and B ferrochrome-silicon, ensuring consistent quality and material performance. The specification applies globally, aligning with internationally recognized principles for standardization.

Key Topics

  • Grades and Composition: Covers two primary grades - Grade A and Grade B - distinguished by their chromium, silicon, and carbon content.
  • Chemical Requirements: Specifies permissible ranges and maximum values for elements such as chromium, silicon, carbon, sulfur, phosphorus, and various trace elements (e.g., nitrogen, manganese, nickel, vanadium).
  • Size and Tolerances: Details standard lump sizes and the allowable tolerances for both SI and inch-pound units to address handling, shipping, and end-use requirements.
  • Test Methods and Analysis:
    • Requires chemical analysis for each shipment.
    • Endorses specific ASTM chemical analysis methods and procedures mutually agreed by purchasing parties.
  • Dual Unit System: Provides requirements in both inch-pound and SI units, emphasizing that values from different unit systems must not be combined.

Applications

The use of ferrochrome-silicon standardized under ASTM A482/A482M is crucial in the following industrial sectors:

  • Steel Industry: Acts as a vital alloy in the production of stainless steel, specialty steels, and other alloys. It functions both as a source of silicon and chromium and as a deoxidizer.
  • Casting and Foundry Works: Used to control the chemical composition during the casting process, providing desirable mechanical properties and resistance qualities.
  • Manufacturing Specifications: Facilitates the procurement process by ensuring buyers and suppliers use reliable, globally accepted benchmarks for ferrochrome-silicon quality.
  • Export and Trade: Assists international trade and compliance, reducing technical barriers by providing harmonized criteria for material acceptance.

Related Standards

Several other standards provide context, guidance, and referenced procedures relevant to ASTM A482/A482M:

  • ASTM A1025/A1025M: General requirements for ferroalloys and alloying materials, referenced for supplementary requirements.
  • ASTM E11: Specification for woven wire test sieve cloth and test sieves, supporting standardized particle sizing.
  • ASTM E364: Former test methods for chemical analysis of ferrochrome-silicon (withdrawn), referenced as a historical baseline for analysis procedures.
  • World Trade Organization (WTO) Principles: Reinforces compliance with WTO guidelines for international standardization, reducing trade barriers.

Adhering to ASTM A482/A482M-11(2021) ensures the reliable production and procurement of ferrochrome-silicon, a critical input in diverse metallurgical applications. Compatibility with international quality and trade requirements provides added assurance for global industry stakeholders. For further technical details or procurement guidelines, always refer to the latest edition of the standard and related ASTM documents.
