(Guide)Standard Guide for Developing and Selecting Wear Tests (Withdrawn 2021)
Standard Guide for Developing and Selecting Wear Tests (Withdrawn 2021)
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The guidance and methodology provided by this guide is applicable for any wear situation and is not limited to material or lubrication. This guide is intended to provide general information and guidance regarding the selection and development of a wear test and does not provide specifics about any one wear test or intended application. In general the variability and correlation that is obtained with any wear test is determined by the degree to which the various elements of the wear test methodology described in this guide are followed.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers general information for the development and selection of a wear test for an intended application.
WITHDRAWN RATIONALE
This guide covers general information for the development and selection of a wear test for an intended application.
Formerly under the jurisdiction of Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion, this guide was withdrawn in November 2021. This guide is being withdrawn without replacement because it has been found to not be useful in selecting a particular wear test. It gives general information regarding wear testing. From the name, one would assume that there is some sort of tree or if/then structure to guide the user in selecting a wear test. This is not the case. As for developing a wear test, clearly if one were to develop a wear test, they would need to be an expert in the area of wear. The brief standard guide would not be helpful in that regard, as it only gives general information. Moreover, the book by Ken Budinski, “Guide to Friction, Wear, and Erosion Testing,” published by ASTM MNL 56 gives a much more in-depth treatment of the topic. The book is useful to both an end user and a test developer. With this in mind, G190 no longer has utility.
