(Specification)Standard Specification for Circular-Knit Geotextile for Use in Subsurface Drainage Applications
Standard Specification for Circular-Knit Geotextile for Use in Subsurface Drainage Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification covers circular-knit geotextiles for use on the outside of perforated pipes and Class B geocomposites in subsurface drainage applications. Material covered by this specification comprises Type A and Type B fabric geotextiles, which have been used extensively as filtration geotextiles in combination with subsurface drainage pipes. The geotextile shall be manufactured from polymeric materials by a circular-knit process, which will ensure a consistent, continuous fabric without seams. Tests for water permittivity, apparent opening size, and puncture strength shall be performed and shall conform to the requirements specified. Per service requirement, additional tests for chemical resistance and durability may be performed as well.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers circular-knit geotextiles for use on the outside of perforated pipes and Class B geocomposites per Specification D7001 in drainage applications.
1.2 The tests used to characterize the geotextile are intended to ensure good workmanship and quality, and are not necessarily adequate for design purposes in view of the importance of environmental factors and specific performance objectives. Tests have been selected with essentially neutral aqueous systems in mind. Other tests may be necessary to establish chemical resistance and durability under the conditions of a particular application.
1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D6707/D6707M-06(2019): Standard Specification for Circular-Knit Geotextile for Use in Subsurface Drainage Applications establishes comprehensive requirements for circular-knit geotextiles used on the exterior of perforated pipes and Class B geocomposites in subsurface drainage applications. Developed by ASTM International, this specification outlines the necessary performance, manufacturing, and quality criteria for geotextile filters, ensuring their suitability for filtration and drainage under varying field conditions.
These geotextiles are manufactured using a circular-knit process from polymeric materials, creating a seamless, continuous fabric. The specification addresses two main types-Type A and Type H-each with defined physical requirements, making them reliable options for projects involving drainage pipes and geocomposite systems.
Key Topics
Circular-Knit Geotextile Construction
- Manufactured by a circular-knit process for uniform, seam-free fabric
- Designed to envelop the exterior surface of perforated pipe snugly and completely
Material Specifications
- Utilizes high-quality polymeric materials for durability and performance
- Two classifications: Type A and Type H
Physical and Mechanical Properties
- Water permittivity: Ensures sufficient water flow through the fabric
- Apparent opening size (AOS): Controls soil retention to limit soil migration
- Puncture strength: Assures fabric integrity during installation and use
Quality Assurance
- Products tested according to referenced ASTM test methods for consistency and reliability
- Suppliers may be required to affirm conformance with the specification upon request
Additional Testing
- Optional testing for chemical resistance and durability reflective of specific application needs and environmental exposure
Units and Compliance
- Standard accommodates both SI and inch-pound units, to be used independently to maintain conformity
Applications
ASTM D6707/D6707M-06(2019) is primarily used in civil, environmental, and geotechnical engineering projects requiring robust subsurface drainage systems. Practical applications include:
Subsurface Drainage Pipes:
- Wrapping perforated pipes with circular-knit geotextiles prevents soil intrusion while allowing water to flow into the drainage system, prolonging pipe functionality and reducing maintenance.
Geocomposites for Pavement Edge Drains:
- Integrating geotextiles with Class B geocomposite drains in roadway construction helps manage groundwater, minimizing pavement distress due to water accumulation.
Landscaping and Retaining Walls:
- Geotextiles act as a filtration layer behind retaining walls and landscape drainage systems to reduce soil erosion and promote efficient drainage.
Projects benefit from the enhanced filtration performance, installation ease, and long-term durability these geotextiles provide.
Related Standards
ASTM D6707/D6707M-06(2019) relies on several other referenced standards that define key terminology, test methods, and material properties. Notable related standards include:
- ASTM D4439: Terminology for Geosynthetics
- ASTM D4491/D4491M: Test Methods for Water Permeability of Geotextiles by Permittivity
- ASTM D4751: Test Methods for Determining Apparent Opening Size of a Geotextile
- ASTM D6241: Test Method for Static Puncture Strength of Geotextiles
- ASTM D7001: Specification for Geocomposites for Pavement Edge Drains and Other High-Flow Applications
Understanding and applying these interrelated standards ensures the correct selection, testing, and installation of circular-knit geotextiles in critical drainage and filtration applications.
