— the cyanamide nitrogen content;
— the methylene-urea nitrogen content (and urea formaldehyde, if applicable);
— the total phosphorus content;
— the water-soluble phosphorus content;
— the neutral ammonium citrate soluble phosphorus content;
— the formic acid soluble phosphorus content;
— the total potassium content;
— the water-soluble potassium content;
— the total magnesium content;
— the water-soluble magnesium content;
— the total calcium content;
— the water-soluble calcium content;
— the total sulfur content;

This document is applicable to the fertilizing products blends where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following components: fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants, and where the following category: inorganic fertilizers is the highest % in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If inorganic fertilizer is not the highest % in the blend, the European Standard for the highest % of the blend applies. In case a fertilizing product blend is composed of components in equal quantity, the user decides which standard to apply. Variations in analytical methods for fertilizing product blends can lead to differing results as some components or matrix interactions can affect the outcome. Validation procedures have shown that developed standard methods are robust and reliable across diverse product compositions, but possible interferences and unexpected results when analysing fertilizing product blends are possible.

Overview
FprEN 17757 is a draft CEN European Standard for inorganic fertilizers - determination of specific nutrients. It provides references to validated test methods used to measure key nutrient contents in inorganic fertilizers and certain fertilizing product blends. The standard supports fertilizer analysis, quality control, and regulatory compliance under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, with a clear link to the essential requirements for EU fertilising products.
This document is particularly relevant for laboratories, manufacturers, regulators, and product compliance teams that need reliable methods for nutrient determination in inorganic fertilizer testing. It also includes guidance for blends where inorganic fertilizers are the dominant component, while noting that matrix effects and component interactions can influence analytical results.
Key Topics
FprEN 17757 covers references for determining a broad range of nutrients, including:
- Nitrogen forms
- total nitrogen
- ammoniacal nitrogen
- nitric nitrogen
- urea nitrogen
- nitrogen from IBDU and CDU
- cyanamide nitrogen
- methylene-urea and urea formaldehyde nitrogen
- Phosphorus forms
- total phosphorus
- water-soluble phosphorus
- neutral ammonium citrate soluble phosphorus
- formic acid soluble phosphorus
- Other essential nutrients
- total and water-soluble potassium
- total and water-soluble magnesium
- total and water-soluble calcium
- total and water-soluble sulfur
- total and water-soluble sodium
The standard also addresses sampling and sample preparation by referring users to the relevant EN provisions. This is important because representative sampling is essential for accurate nutrient analysis and comparable results.
A notable feature of this draft is that it supersedes CEN/TS 17757:2022 and adds coverage for formic acid soluble phosphorus and total potassium. It also includes Annex ZA, linking the standard to EU legal requirements and conformity assessment needs.
Applications
FprEN 17757 is valuable in many practical contexts:
- Fertilizer product compliance for EU market access
- Laboratory testing of nutrient content in inorganic fertilizers
- Quality assurance and quality control in fertilizer production
- Certification and verification of nutrient claims
- Regulatory documentation for fertilizing products blends
The standard is especially useful for blends containing fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, and plant biostimulants, when inorganic fertilizers are the highest percentage component. It helps users select the correct analytical route based on product composition and nutrient type.
Because fertilizing product blends can produce different results depending on matrix behavior, FprEN 17757 supports a more consistent and standardized approach to nutrient determination in fertilizers.
