Overview

EN ISO 27065:2017/A1:2019 is a CEN-endorsed amendment to ISO 27065 that updates performance requirements for protective clothing worn by operators applying pesticides and for re‑entry workers. The amendment introduces a defined surrogate test chemical (EC‑DY, an emulsion of Disperse Yellow 26) and clarifies laboratory test procedures and pass/fail criteria for material and seam resistance to penetration and permeation. The document is intended for harmonized national implementation across CEN members and supports relevant EU directives.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Surrogate test chemical (EC‑DY): The amendment specifies use of a pesticide surrogate - an emulsion of Disperse Yellow 26 - diluted to 2.5% EC‑DY in water grade 3 or deionized water for many tests, with undiluted EC‑DY used for short‑duration concentrate exposure.
  • Penetration testing (ISO 22608):
    • Materials for Level C1 and C2 clothing are tested using ISO 22608 Method A with 0.2 ml test chemical; three specimens per material are required.
    • Pass limits in the amendment: Level C1 upper percent penetration = 40%; Level C2 upper percent penetration = 5%.
    • Method B (chemical analysis) is required to validate results when Method A results are borderline (specific ranges are defined in the amendment). Method A is gravimetric and can register water mass; Method B confirms actual dye/active ingredient.
  • Permeation testing (ISO 19918):
    • Level C3 materials and seams use ISO 19918 cumulative permeation procedures. Testing durations depend on use claims:
      • Diluted formulations: 1 hour at 2.5% EC‑DY.
      • Concentrates (short duration): 15 minutes with undiluted EC‑DY.
    • The amendment sets a maximum cumulative permeation limit for C3 (see the full standard for the exact pass value and units).
  • Seam testing: Seams are tested per ISO 22608, placed so the test chemical contacts the seam directly; multiple seam types must be tested if used in the garment.
  • Test specimen and reporting requirements: Three specimens per material/seam; Method B results take precedence when both methods are applied.

Applications and users

  • PPE manufacturers designing and certifying protective clothing for agricultural pesticide application.
  • Testing laboratories performing penetration and permeation tests to ISO 22608 and ISO 19918 using the EC‑DY surrogate.
  • Regulators and certifiers assessing compliance with EU / national PPE requirements.
  • Employers, safety officers and risk assessors in agriculture and crop protection using the standard to select appropriate protective clothing for operators and re‑entry workers.

Related standards

  • ISO 22608 (resistance to penetration tests)
  • ISO 19918 (permeation testing)
  • ISO 3696 (water quality - grade 3)
  • ISO 7000-3126 (pictogram placement referenced in the amendment)

The EN ISO 27065:2017/A1:2019 standard establishes a comprehensive framework for protective clothing intended for operators applying pesticides and re-entry workers. It delineates minimum performance, classification, and labelling requirements which are critical for ensuring safety during pesticide handling activities, including the application of diluted formulations, mixing and loading, and equipment cleaning. One of the significant strengths of this standard lies in its broad applicability; it covers a variety of protective clothing types, such as shirts, jackets, trousers, coveralls, aprons, protective sleeves, and headwear made from textile materials. This inclusive scope ensures that a diverse range of operators is accounted for, facilitating greater compliance and uniformity in protective measures across different roles and tasks associated with pesticide application. Furthermore, the amendment introduced in Amendment 1 enhances the standard's relevance by incorporating surrogate test chemicals, which help to improve the reliability of testing for the performance of protective clothing under realistic conditions. This is a substantial advancement, as it addresses the need for precise evaluations of how effectively protective clothing can guard against potential hazards encountered during pesticide application. While the standard provides extensive guidelines, it is important to note its specific exclusions, particularly regarding respiratory protection, hand and foot gear, and protection against biocides or highly volatile liquids. This focus allows for a targeted approach in protective clothing design and testing, ensuring that the specifications remain relevant to the operational realities faced by workers in the agricultural sector. In summary, EN ISO 27065:2017/A1:2019 stands out for its detailed requirements and testing processes that enhance safety for operators handling pesticides, making it not only a crucial document for compliance but also a tool for raising industry standards in protective clothing. The standard's emphasis on performance and applicability ensures that it meets the current needs of the agriculture sector while promoting both worker safety and efficiency.
