EN 13075-1:2026 is a CEN standard for determining the breaking value of cationic bituminous emulsions by the mineral filler method. It specifies how to add a reference filler at a controlled rate to a stirred emulsion, measure the mass needed to break it, and report the result as the breaking value (BV) for 100 g of emulsion. The method is used in laboratories working with bitumens and bituminous binders when a comparable measure of breaking behaviour is needed.

What does EN 13075-1:2026 specify?

EN 13075-1:2026 specifies a laboratory method for cationic bituminous emulsions and organises the work into clauses for scope, references, terms, principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, procedure, calculation, precision and reporting. Annex A gives the required characteristics of the reference fillers.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ACharacteristics of the reference fillers

The standard focuses on the mineral filler method. It also includes a safety warning telling users to assess hazards, control risks and check regulatory limits before use.

What are the key requirements of EN 13075-1:2026?

EN 13075-1:2026 requires the test to be run with a specified emulsion mass, a controlled filler feed rate and defined equipment, then reported as a calculated BV result. In practice, the method only gives comparable results when the same filler, conditioning, weighing and stirring conditions are used.

  • Clause 4, principle - Add reference filler at a uniform rate to a stirred emulsion until the emulsion breaks, then weigh the added filler. This is the core measurement: the result depends on how much filler was needed to cause breakup.
  • Clause 5.1, reference fillers - Use Forshammer SE, Q92 or Sikaisol as the reference filler and apply the conversion factors given in Clause 9. In disputes, the laboratories must use the same filler and the same procedure, which matters when results are compared between parties.
  • Clause 6, apparatus - Use either the semi-automatic or manual equipment set, including a calibrated filler feeder, timer, balance, oven and temperature control. The feeder must deliver a continuous flow of (0,35 ± 0,10) g/s, so the test depends on keeping the feed rate in range.
  • Clause 7, sampling - Take the laboratory sample in accordance with EN 58 and prepare the test sample in accordance with EN 12594. This matters because the result only represents the sample that was correctly taken and prepared.
  • Clause 8, procedure - Condition the emulsion and filler at 25 °C for at least 1,5 h, dry the filler at 110 °C to constant mass, then run either the semi-automatic or manual mixing procedure. The procedure uses about 100 g of emulsion per test and repeats the test on a second portion from the same bottle.
  • Clauses 9 and 10, calculation and expression - Calculate BV from the added filler mass and emulsion mass, convert the value to the Forshammer equivalent, report each individual value to 0,1 and the mean to the nearest integer. This gives a single number that can be compared across tests and filler types.
  • Clause 11, precision - The stated precision comes from a CEN round robin study: repeatability is 10 % and reproducibility is 40 % of the mean value. These figures help users judge whether two results are close enough to be considered consistent.
  • Clause 12, test report - Record the sample identification, reference to the document, procedure used, feeding rate, rotational speed, filler used, result, deviations, unusual features and test date. That documentation is important for audits and technical disputes.

What terms does EN 13075-1:2026 define?

EN 13075-1:2026 gives one explicit definition in Clause 3 and uses several technical terms throughout the method.

  • Breaking value (BV) - The dimensionless number corresponding to the mass of reference filler, in grams, needed to coagulate 100 g of bituminous emulsion.
  • Reference filler - The specified filler material used to run the test and make results comparable across laboratories.
  • Forshammer equivalent - The converted result basis used in Clause 9 so results from different fillers can be expressed on one scale.
  • Semi-automatic procedure - The procedure that uses a stirrer motor and metal can arrangement.
  • Manual procedure - The procedure carried out in a dish with a spatula.
  • Repeatability, r - The closeness expected between two results from the same operator and apparatus under the same conditions.
  • Reproducibility, R - The closeness expected between two results from different laboratories under normal correct use of the method.

Who uses EN 13075-1:2026?

EN 13075-1:2026 is used by laboratories testing cationic bituminous emulsions, by manufacturers of bitumens and bituminous binders, and by quality control staff who need to compare breaking behaviour. It is also relevant for technical buyers, specifiers and dispute-resolution laboratories because the standard fixes the filler type, procedure and reporting format.

In practice, users apply it to incoming-material checks, product comparison, process control and customer-supplier disagreements about emulsion performance.

What changed in EN 13075-1:2026 from the previous edition?

EN 13075-1:2026 supersedes EN 13075-1:2016. The stated changes are:

  • the name “Caolin” for the Q92 filler was removed from Clause 5.1
  • Clause 6 was updated and revised to use the metrological concept of maximum permissible measurement error
  • the stirrer description in 6.2.2 was clarified
  • Sikaisol was moved to third place in the reference fillers list in Annex A
  • the particle size distribution envelope for Q92 in Annex A was updated and tightened

and bituminous binders”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 13075-1:2016.
prEN 13075-1:2025 includes the following significant changes with respect to EN 13075-1:2016:
a) Clause 5, “Reagents and materials”: in paragraph 5.1 the naming “Caolin” for the Q92 filler, which
could lead to confusion with the mineralogical nature of kaolin, has been removed;
b) Clause 6, “Apparatus”, has been updated and revised, standardizing the use of the metrological
concept of “maximal permissible measurement error” for describing the measurement precision;
c) in paragraph 6.2.2, the description of the stirrer has been clarified;
d) Annex A, “Characteristics of the reference fillers”: the Sikaisol filler, which production has been
disrupted, has been downgraded to the third place in the reference fillers list;
e) in paragraph A2 the particle size distribution envelope of the Q92 filler has been updated and
tightened, thanks to the to process improvements brought by the producer.

dimensionless number corresponding to the mass of reference filler, in grams, needed to coagulate 100 g
of bituminous emulsion
4 Principle
A reference filler is added at a uniform rate to a specified quantity of stirred cationic bituminous emulsion.
When the emulsion has completely broken, the mass of added filler is determined by weighing. The mass
of filler (in grams), multiplied by 100 and divided by the mass of emulsion (in grams), is the breaking
value (3.1).
NOTE The cationic or anionic nature of an emulsion can be determined with EN 1430 [1].
