EN 54-27:2015/prA1:2016
(Amendment)Fire detection and fire alarms systems - Part 27: Duct smoke detectors
Fire detection and fire alarms systems - Part 27: Duct smoke detectors
This European Standard specifies requirements, test methods and performance criteria for fire detectors which detect smoke in air ducts in buildings as a part of a fire detection and fire alarm system or as a detector for a fire protection system.
This European Standard provides for the assessment and verification of consistency of performance (AVCP) of duct smoke detectors to this EN.
For the testing of other types of smoke detectors, or smoke detectors working on different principles, this European standard can be used only for guidance.
Duct smoke detectors with special characteristics and developed for specific risks are not covered by this European standard.

Overview
EN 54-27:2015/prA1:2016 is a European Standard from CEN that defines requirements for duct smoke detectors used in building ventilation systems as part of a fire detection and fire alarm system or as a detector for a fire protection system. The standard specifies performance criteria, test methods and requirements, and provides procedures for the Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) of duct smoke detectors to ensure consistent, reliable operation. It also clarifies scope items through Amendment A1 (2016), which corrects errors and refines the standard’s application.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Covers detectors that monitor air ducts (supply and extract) and operate as part of a fire detection or protection system. Detectors developed for special risks or with special characteristics are excluded.
- Performance criteria: Defines expected detector performance under specified conditions to ensure dependable smoke detection in ducted airflows.
- Test methods: Prescribes laboratory and functional tests used to verify detector sensitivity, response and robustness when installed in duct environments.
- Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP): Provides the framework for demonstrating consistent production quality and conformity to the standard.
- Guidance usage: The standard can be used for guidance when testing other types or principles of smoke detectors, but it is primarily intended for conventional duct smoke detector types.
- Amendment A1 (2016): Introduces clarifications and corrections to the original 2015 edition to improve scope definition and editorial accuracy.
Practical applications
- Ensures reliable early detection of smoke carried by HVAC ducts to trigger alarms, HVAC shutdown, or smoke control measures.
- Supports procurement specifications and conformity assessment for duct smoke detectors in commercial, institutional and industrial buildings.
- Used as a reference for type-testing, factory production control documentation, and product certification under European market requirements.
Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers designing and proving duct smoke detectors for the European market.
- Test laboratories performing type and performance testing and AVCP assessments.
- System designers and engineers specifying detectors in HVAC-integrated fire detection systems.
- Installers and commissioning teams validating correct detector selection and placement in ductwork.
- Certification bodies and authorities assessing product conformity and compliance.
