Metallic coatings - Porosity tests - Ferroxyl test (ISO 10309:1994)

This International Standard specifies a method of revealing pores or other discontinuities, when testing metallic coatings, that are not visibly affected by ferricyanide and chloride ions during the test period and that are cathodic to iron and steel. This method is especially useful for thick, hard chromium coatings used for wear resistance.
NOTE 1 With some coating materials a very thin layer is dissolved by the sodium chloride solution during a 10 minute application period (see 5.2.3). The impact of such dissolution is that potential porosity, i.e. pores that have been covered over by very thin layers, are sometimes re-exposed. Experience has shown that such potential porosity is frequently re-exposed during actual service.

Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren zum Erkennen von Poren oder anderen Fehlstellen bei der
Prüfung metallischer Überzüge fest, die während der Prüfdauer durch Hexacyanoferrat- und Chlorionen
nicht erkennbar beeinträchtigt werden und die sich gegenüber Eisen und Stahl kathodisch verhalten. Dieses
Verfahren ist besonders für dicke, harte Chromüberzüge, die zur Verbesserung der Verschleißbeständigkeit
dienen, geeignet.
ANMERKUNG 1 Bei einigen Überzugswerkstoffen löst die Natriumchloridlösung innerhalb einer 10-minütigen
Anwendungsdauer (siehe 5.2.3) eine sehr dünne Schicht auf. Diese Auflösung bewirkt, dass eine mögliche Porosität, d. h.
von sehr dünnen Schichten überdeckte Poren, manchmal wieder freigelegt wird. Erfahrungsgemäß wird diese mögliche
Porosität häufig beim tatsächlichen Einsatz wieder freigelegt.

La présente Norme internationale prescrit une méthode pour la détection des pores ou de toute autre discontinuité lors de l'essai des revêtements métalliques qui ne sont pas altérés de manière visible par les ions ferricyanure et chlorure pendant la période d'essai et qui peuvent servir de cathode avec les produits sidérurgiques. La méthode est particulièrement utile dans le cas d'épais revêtements durs de chrome à usages industriels utilisés pour la résistance à l'usure.
NOTE 1 Avec certains matériaux de revêtement, une très mince couche se dissout dans la solution de chlorure de sodium pendant une durée d'application de 10 minutes (voir 5.2.3). Dans certains cas, cette mise en solution a pour effet de faire réapparaître à la surface les pores potentiels, c'est-à-dire ceux qui ont été recouverts par de très minces couches. L'expérience a montré que ces pores réapparaissent fréquemment à la surface dans les conditions d'utilisation réelle.

Ta mednarodni standard določa metodo odkrivanja por ali drugih prekinitev pri preskušanju kovinskih prevlek, na katere med preskusnim obdobjem nimajo vidnega vpliva fericianidni in kloridni ioni, ki delujejo katodno na železo in jeklo. Ta metoda je zlasti uporabna za debele prevleke iz trdega kroma, ki se uporabljajo za odpornost na obrabo. OPOMBA 1: Med 10-minutnim obdobjem uporabe nekaterih prevlečnih materialov (glej točko 5.2.3) raztopina natrijevega klorida povzroči raztopitev zelo tanke plasti. Zaradi te raztopitve se možna porozivnost oz. pore, ki jih prekrijejo zelo tanke plasti, včasih znova pojavijo. Izkušnje so pokazale, da se ta možna porozivnost pogosto znova pojavi med dejansko uporabo.

The text of ISO 10309:1994 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 107 “Metallic and other

inorganic coatings” of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been taken over

as EN ISO 10309:2016 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 262 “Metallic and other inorganic coatings” the

secretariat of which is held by BSI.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an

identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2016, and conflicting national standards shall

be withdrawn at the latest by October 2016.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
