Overview

EN 13116:2024 - Curtain walling - Resistance to wind load - Performance requirements is a CEN standard that specifies structural performance criteria for curtain walling under static wind pressures (positive and negative), covering both fixed and openable parts. Applicable to any curtain walling product as defined in EN 13830, this standard defines serviceability and ultimate limit state requirements, test expectations and reporting for verifying resistance to wind load. EN 13116:2024 supersedes the 2001 edition and aligns deflection limits with EN 13830.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to curtain walling systems per EN 13830; covers structural performance under design and increased wind loads.
  • Design wind load: Determined following Eurocode procedures (EN 1991-1-4).
  • Increased (safety) wind load: Defined as 1.5 × design wind load.
  • Serviceability (design wind load) - frontal deflection limits:
    • d ≤ L / 200 for L ≤ 3 000 mm
    • d ≤ 5 mm + L / 300 for 3 000 mm < L < 7 500 mm
    • d ≤ L / 250 for L ≥ 7 500 mm
    • L = span between points of support/anchorage to the building
  • Residual deformation: After peak loading and one hour recovery, residual deformation must not exceed 5% of maximum measured deformation or 1,0 mm, whichever is greater.
  • Support displacement: Difference between peak positive and negative loads at support points shall be < 2 mm.
  • Air permeability repeatability: Positive difference between air permeability at maximum pressure in first and second tests limited (see standard for exact numeric threshold).
  • Ultimate limit state (increased wind load): No permanent damage to framing, infill panels, opening units, fasteners or anchors; panels, beads and capping must remain secure and gaskets undisturbed. If glass breaks during test, replacement and continuation is allowed only if breakage is not due to glazing/frame faults.
  • Test methods and reporting: Specimens tested per EN 12179 with test sequence per EN 13830; reports must conform to EN 12179 requirements.

Applications and users

EN 13116:2024 is used to:

The standard EN 13116:2024 provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the resistance of curtain walling to wind loads, delineating performance requirements for both fixed and openable components under varying air pressure conditions. This document plays a crucial role in ensuring that curtain walling systems meet safety and durability standards, which is vital in the construction industry. One of the significant strengths of EN 13116:2024 is its clear delineation of structural performance criteria specifically related to wind load. By addressing both positive and negative static air pressures, the standard enables manufacturers and builders to better understand how curtain walling systems will behave in different environmental conditions. This rigorous approach to testing and classification enhances the reliability of products, fostering trust among consumers and stakeholders in the construction sector. Additionally, the scope of EN 13116:2024 encompasses all curtain walling products as defined in EN 13830, ensuring broad applicability. This inclusivity means that the standard can be utilized by a wide array of stakeholders, from manufacturers producing various curtain walling systems to architects and engineers responsible for design and installation. As a result, it promotes a uniform understanding of performance expectations across the industry. Moreover, the relevance of this standard cannot be understated. With increasing concerns about building resilience in the face of climate change and extreme weather conditions, standards like EN 13116:2024 become essential tools for ensuring that curtain walling not only complies with regulatory requirements but also offers enhanced safety and performance in real-world applications. The emphasis on wind load resistance directly correlates with the protection of structural integrity, occupant safety, and energy efficiency, reinforcing the standard's vital role in contemporary building practices. In summary, EN 13116:2024 stands out as an essential reference for anyone involved in the design, manufacture, or application of curtain walling systems, ensuring high standards of performance against wind loads. Its strengths lie in its thorough scope and relevance to modern construction challenges, making it a cornerstone document for maintaining quality and safety in architecture and construction.
