General Information
Overview
EN 14701-1:2006 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a laboratory method for measuring the capillary suction time (CST) of sludge and sludge suspensions. CST is a rapid, simple test used to assess sludge filtration properties and provide a qualitative indication of sludge dewaterability. The standard applies to sludges from stormwater systems, urban wastewater collection and treatment, industrial wastewater similar to urban wastewater (Directive 91/271/EEC), and water supply treatment plants - and is also applicable to other sludge origins.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: CST measures the time for a liquid front to travel between two fixed points on an absorbent filter paper; faster wetting indicates better filterability.
- Scope of application: sewage sludges (activated, digested, thickened), waterworks sludges and other suspensions.
- Apparatus: standard CST device with reservoir and probes, automatic timing unit; recommended filter paper (e.g., chromatography paper such as Whatman No. 17 or equivalent). Annex A describes common instrument configurations (e.g., Triton Type 304).
- Procedure (high level):
- Place filter paper with consistent orientation.
- Mix sample by decanting between beakers four times.
- Immediately fill reservoir and start measurement.
- Repeat to obtain at least three valid readings.
- Expression of results: arithmetic mean of valid readings; discard measurements differing by >20% from the mean; temperature influence may be compensated using the ratio of dynamic viscosities (Annex D provides viscosity vs. temperature).
- Limitations: CST provides qualitative/comparative data and is influenced by filter paper type, surface tension, temperature and solids concentration. It does not directly indicate achievable solids content after dewatering.
- Precision and validation: Annex E summarizes round-robin validation results and gives repeatability and reproducibility statistics for different sludge types.
Applications and users
EN 14701-1:2006 is used for:
- Routine laboratory screening of sludge dewaterability in wastewater treatment plants.
- Process monitoring and troubleshooting for dewatering operations (belt presses, centrifuges).
- Research and development or comparative product testing for conditioning chemicals and polymers.
- Environmental laboratories, utilities, consultants, regulators and equipment manufacturers seeking a standardized, fast indicator of filterability.
