“Laboratory equipment”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 15154-2:2006.
EN 15154-2:2006:
— harmonization with EN 15154-5.
EN 15154 consists of the following parts under the general title Emergency safety showers:
— Part 1: Plumbed-in body showers for laboratories
— Part 2: Plumbed-in eye-wash units
— Part 3: Non-plumbed-in body showers
— Part 4: Non-plumbed-in eye-wash units
— Part 5: Water overhead body showers for sites other than laboratories
— Part 6: Plumbed-in multiple nozzle body showers for sites other than laboratories

NOTE Attention is drawn to national regulations in some European countries, e.g. Germany, which can request
to connect emergency safety eye-wash units to a water supply.
Introduction
Plumbed-in eye-wash units are designed and intended to be installed in close range of persons working
in a potentially hazardous area. The main purpose of these devices is to immediately deliver flushing fluid
in sufficient volume to flush the eyes following exposure to injurious substances or heat. With this
accomplished the injured person can proceed to the care of an ophthalmologist.
Annex B provides recommendations regarding environmental impact, and Annex A provides
recommendations on general settings for shower installations.
1 Scope
This document is a product specification, giving performance requirements for emergency safety eye-
wash units connected to the water supply. It is applicable to plumbed-in eye-wash units only.
Requirements are given in respect of the performance, installation, adjustment and marking of the eye-
wash units, as well as installation, operation and maintenance instructions to be given by the
manufacturer.
NOTE Attention is drawn to national regulations which can apply in respect of the installation and use of eye-
wash units.

emergency safety eye-wash unit
device specially designed and intended to deliver a flushing fluid to irrigate and flush the eyes and to
sufficiently wash away contaminants or to dilute them, rendering them harmless
[SOURCE: prEN 15154-1:2024, 3.4]
3.2
plumbed-in emergency safety eye-wash unit
emergency safety eye-wash unit that is permanently connected to a continuous water supply
4 Performance
4.1 Wash-off time
The plumbed in eye-wash unit shall be able to deliver water at a constant manufacturer-specified
pressure, and continued for at least 15 min.
NOTE An intervention time of less than 10 s and speedy safe removal of contaminated lenses, contaminated
clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) can help effective decontamination.
4.2 Flow rate of water
Plumbed-in eye-wash units shall be designed to deliver a constant flow rate of minimum 6 l/min per
nozzle at a flow pressure to be specified by the manufacturer and to be measured where the eye-wash
unit is connected to the water system.
The eye-wash unit shall be non-injurious to the user.
Nozzle(s) shall be protected from airborne contaminants. Whatever means is used to afford such
protection, its removal shall not require a separate motion by the user when activating the eye-wash unit.
4.3 Jet height
The jet of water supplied by the nozzle(s) shall spray at a minimum height of 100 mm and may spray at
a maximum height of 300 mm both measured from the nozzle centre, before tipping over or collapsing.
4.4 Water quality and water temperature
Materials used in the construction of the eye-wash units shall not affect the water quality or contaminate
the water supply (see Note 1).
Potable water or water of a similar quality is required for eye-wash units.
The design and construction of the eye-wash unit should be able to dispense water of temperature
recommended in A.1
NOTE 1 Water of a similar quality can be determined by reviewing e.g. relevant European or national standards.
NOTE 2 Attention is drawn to national regulations which might apply in some European countries (see
Bibliography [2] and [3]).
5 Design requirements for installation
5.1 General
Depending on the work carried out at the site and the location of the installation, attention shall be given
to the avoidance of overheating through radiant heat or danger through freezing so as to be non-injurious
to the user, i.e. preventing scalding or hypothermia.
5.2 Clearance
The outlet nozzle(s) on plumbed-in eye-wash units, shall be designed to be installed at a height of
(1 000 ± 200) mm above the level on which the user stands and at least 150 mm from the nearest wall or
obstruction. The distance from the nearest wall or obstacle shall be at least 150 mm, measured from the
imaginary centre of the eye shower's jet height.
Attention shall be drawn to sufficient head room during use of the unit.
The activator of the eye-wash unit shall be the only fitting allowed to ingress this space. This clearance
space shall be kept free of any other components whatsoever.
Clear entrance to the eye-wash unit shall be with a width of at least 800 mm and a height of at least
2 000 mm.
6 Activation system
6.1 General
The eye-wash unit activation system shall be capable of being activated to full flow by a single unassisted
individual.
