Protective equipment for martial arts - Part 3: Additional requirements and test methods for trunk protectors

This European Standard specifies additional requirements and test methods for trunk protectors used in unarmed martial arts such as taekwondo, karate, kick-boxing and similar disciplines.
It also applies to breast protectors for men.

Diese Europäische Norm legt zusätzliche Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren für den Oberkörperschutz fest, der bei unbewaffneten Kampfsportarten, wie Taekwondo, Karate, Kick-Boxen und ähnlichen Disziplinen, benutzt wird.
Sie gilt auch für den Brustschutz für Männer.

La présente Norme européenne spécifie des exigences et méthodes d'essai complémentaires relatives aux protège-torses, utilisés dans le cadre de la pratique des arts martiaux sans utilisation d'armes, tels que le taekwondo, le karaté, le kick-boxing et autres disciplines semblables.
Elle s'applique également aux protège-torses pour hommes.

Overview

EN 13277-3:2013 - Protective equipment for martial arts, Part 3 - specifies additional requirements and test methods for trunk protectors used in unarmed martial arts (taekwondo, karate, kick‑boxing and similar). It also covers men’s breast protectors. This European Standard is intended to be used together with EN 13277‑1 (general requirements and test methods) and supports conformity with the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 89/686/EEC.

• Sizing: Manufacturers must state the wearer's height range (in centimetres) for each protector size.
• Zone of protection: Location and dimensions of the protected area are defined in the standard (dimensions vary by wearer height and are given in a table).
• Restraint / fixing systems: A restraint system must allow attachment with the assistance of no more than one assistant. For karate protectors the fixings must be textile only (no metal, plastic or hard parts).
• Impact performance:
  • General impact energy requirement: 12 J.
  • Specific impact energy for karate protectors: 2.6 J.
  • Maximum allowable peak force: 3 kN.
  • Minimum of three test positions.
• Karate‑specific limits: Total mass ≤ 250 g and thickness ≤ 15 mm for all sizes of karate trunk protectors.
• Testing procedures: Sampling and conditioning per EN 13277‑1. Impact test apparatus requirements include a flat steel support with a central anvil (anvil diameter 100 ± 2 mm), compression ring (10 ± 0.1 kg) to fix the sample, and an electronic measurement device with min. 2 000 Hz measurement frequency and load cell accuracy class 0.2.
• Marking & information: Marking per EN 13277‑1; karate trunk protectors must be explicitly marked as “only for karate.” Manufacturer must supply permitted combinations and any restrictions.
