This International Standard specifies three methods for carrying out a stacking test on a complete, filled transport
package, or on a unit load, using a static load. Whichever method is employed, the test may be used to assess the
performance of a package or a unit load, in terms of its strength or the protection that it offers to its contents when it
is subjected to stacking. It may be performed either as a single test to investigate the effects (deformation, creep,
collapse or failure) of stacking or as part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of a package or a
unit load to withstand a distribution system that includes a stacking hazard.
The test may also be used to investigate performance under particular conditions of loading, as, for example, when
the bottom package in a stack rests on an open-decked pallet; or when the profile of the superimposed load is
eccentric, as when it is supported on the bearers of a single-decked pallet which rests on a container. For such
purposes, one of the three methods of carrying out the test may be more suitable than the others.

In dieser Internationalen Norm werden drei Verfahren für eine Stapelprüfung versandfertiger Packstücke oder Ladeeinheiten unter Verwendung einer statischen Last beschrieben. Alle Verfahren dienen dazu, die Festig-keit von Packstücken und Ladeeinheiten oder den Schutz zu beurteilen, den sie dem Packstoff bieten, wenn die Packstücke oder Ladeeinheiten einer Stapelbeanspruchung ausgesetzt werden. Sie dürfen entweder als Einzelprüfungen durchgeführt werden, um die Auswirkungen (Verformung, Kriechen, Zusammenbruch oder sonstiges Versagen) einer Stapelbeanspruchung zu untersuchen, oder als Teil einer Prüffolge zur Ermittlung der Widerstandsfähigkeit einer Verpackung im Rahmen eines bestimmten Verteilungssystems (Transport-kette), das Stapelbeanspruchungen einschließt.
Diese Prüfung darf auch zur Untersuchung besonderer Belastungsbedingungen angewendet werden, z. B. wenn das unterste Packstück eines Stapels nicht ganzflächig aufliegt oder wenn die Last außermittig oder z. B. durch die Kufen einer Palette aufgebracht wird. Für diese Zwecke ist das geeignetste Verfahren auszu-wählen.
ANMERKUNG Eine Stapelprüfung unter Verwendung einer Druckprüfmaschine wird in ISO 12048 ) beschrieben.

La présente Norme internationale spécifie trois méthodes d'essai de gerbage des emballages d'expédition
complets et pleins ou de charges unitaires utilisant une charge statique. Quelle que soit la méthode mise en
oeuvre, l'essai peut être utilisé pour évaluer les caractéristiques d'un emballage ou d'une charge unitaire en
fonction de sa résistance ou de la protection qu'il offre à son contenu lors du gerbage. L'essai peut être effectué
comme essai simple dans le but d'examiner les effets (déformation, glissement, effondrement ou défaillance) de ce
gerbage ou il peut faire partie d'une série d'essais destinés à mesurer la résistance d'un emballage ou d'une
charge unitaire dans un système de distribution qui comprend un risque au gerbage.
L'essai peut également être utilisé pour déterminer le comportement d'un emballage placé dans des conditions
particulières de mise en charge, comme lorsque l'emballage inférieur d'une gerbe repose sur une palette à tablier
ouvert, ou lorsque le profil de la charge superposée est excentrique dans le cas où elle est supportée par les
appuis d'une palette à simple tablier reposant sur un conteneur. Pour de telles applications, l'une des trois
méthodes d'essai peut s'avérer plus appropriée que les deux autres.
NOTE Une méthode pour effectuer un essai de gerbage à l'aide d'une machine d'essai de compression est donnée dans
l'ISO 120481).

Foreword
The text of the International Standard from Technical Committee ISO/TC 122 "Packaging" of the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has been taken over as a European
Standard by Technical Committee CEN/TC 261 "Packaging", the secretariat of which is held by
AFNOR.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of
an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by March 2003, and conflicting national
standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by March 2003.
This document supersedes EN 22234:1992.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of
the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech
