Overview
EN 4855-06:2025 - "Aerospace series - ECO efficiency of catering equipment - Part 06: Espresso maker" (CEN) defines a standardized test method and calculation procedure to quantify energy use and operational performance of espresso makers installed on commercial aircraft. The standard produces two key, comparable metrics: an Energy Consumption Index (ECI) and a Performance Index (PI). Note: espresso sensory quality (taste/quality) is explicitly outside the scope.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test purpose: Measure power demand during initial heating, steady‑state, and brewing to derive energy/performance indices.
- Test conditions: Environmental, power supply, measurement equipment and test setup are aligned with EN 4855-01:2025 (general conditions).
- Test media and settings:
- Potable water at (15 ± 1) °C and water pressure (25 ± 2) psi (≈1.72 ± 0.14 bar).
- Espresso brew volume defined as 25 ml to 40 ml.
- Measurement sequence:
- Record energy during initial heating and during a 1 h steady‑state period.
- Perform 20 consecutive brews (replace coffee medium per manufacturer) to measure average cycle time and average energy per brew.
- Deactivate non‑brewing functions (e.g., warming plates) during testing.
- Outputs and calculations:
- Average steady‑state power and energy per brew (kVA, kVAh) are recorded.
- The standard prescribes calculation of a scaled kerosene-equivalent consumption per espresso and the dimensionless ECI relative to a reference (reference kerosene consumption = 0.112 kg/espresso).
- The PI compares measured average cycle time to a reference cycle time (reference t_E,ref = 0.00950 h).
- Reporting: Test data and calculated indices are documented on a calculation sheet per EN 4855-01.
Applications and who uses it
- Aircraft manufacturers (OEMs) and galley designers - to evaluate and compare espresso makers for new aircraft installations.
- In-flight catering equipment suppliers and product engineers - to optimize design for lower energy use and faster cycle times.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to provide repeatable, comparable energy and performance data for procurement and compliance.
- Airline sustainability and procurement teams - to benchmark equipment energy performance (ECI) and operational productivity (PI) when selecting galley appliances.
