EN 12152:2023/prA1
(Amendment)Curtain walling - Air permeability - Performance requirements and classification
- Abstract
This document specifies requirements and classification of air permeability of both fixed and openable parts of curtain walling, under positive and negative static air pressure.
This document applies to curtain walling as specified in EN 13830.
NOTE This version of EN 12152:2023 will supersede EN 12152:2002. Existing test results according to EN 12152:2002 could be considered still valid compared with this version of EN 12152.

EN 12152:2023/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment to the curtain walling air permeability standard EN 12152:2023. It revises the way air permeability is defined, tested and classified for fixed and openable parts of curtain walling under positive and negative static air pressure. The document is intended for use with curtain walling covered by EN 13830.
What does EN 12152:2023/prA1 specify?
EN 12152:2023/prA1 specifies amendments to the air permeability requirements and classification for curtain walling. It keeps the focus on fixed and openable parts, and it aligns the wording around how test results are related to area, joint length and pressure.
The document applies to curtain walling as specified in EN 13830. The amendment is organized as a short set of modification clauses, preceded by a European foreword.
- European foreword
- Clause 1 - modifications to 3.4, air permeability
- Clause 2 - modifications to 3.5, fixed joint
- Clause 3 - modifications to 3.7, openable joint
- Clause 4 - modifications to Clause 5, Requirements
- Clause 5 - modification to the key of Figure 1
- Clause 6 - modifications to Clause 7, Classification
- Clause 7 - modification to the key of Figure 3
- Clause 8 - modification to the title of Figure 3
What are the key requirements of EN 12152:2023/prA1?
EN 12152:2023/prA1 mainly clarifies how air permeability is expressed, how joints are separated between fixed and openable parts, and how classification is read. In practice, this affects how specimens are prepared, how test results are reported, and how performance classes are claimed.
Air permeability expression
Clause 3.4 revises the note on air permeability so the flow rate is understood as a volume rate in cubic metres per hour related either to the overall area of the curtain walling or to the metre length of fixed joint. For users, that means the report has to state the basis of the result clearly, because the same test can be expressed in two different ways.
Fixed and openable joints
Clause 3.5 redefines a fixed joint as all joints except the joints of openable parts. Clause 3.7 defines openable joints as the joints of openable parts, including moving casement or sash joints in accordance with EN 12207 and the glazing/infill joints of openable elements. In practice, this separates leakage paths that belong to the fixed wall from those that belong to the opening elements.
Requirements for testing
Clause 5 states that air permeability for the fixed areas of curtain walling shall not count air passing through joints of openable parts. It also links classification to both positive and negative test pressures, using overall area or fixed joint length as the reference. For laboratories and manufacturers, this means the fixed-part test and the openable-part joints must be treated consistently.
Classification
Clause 7 updates the classification wording, including the exceptional category. The text ties that category to performance at the maximum test pressure and across the full range of specified pressure steps. In practice, a one-off result is not enough - the performance has to hold across the stated pressure sequence.
Figure keys and joint separation
The amendment also corrects the key of Figure 1 and revises Figure 3 and its title. Figure 3 identifies fixed joints, openable joints according to EN 12207, and glazing/infill joints of openable elements, which are taped during fixed-joint tests. That matters because the figure tells users exactly which seals are included in each test condition.
What terms does EN 12152:2023/prA1 define?
- Air permeability - the rate of air passage through curtain walling, expressed as a volume rate related to area or fixed joint length.
- Fixed joint - all joints other than the joints of openable parts.
- Openable joint - the joints of openable parts, including moving casement or sash joints and the glazing/infill joints of openable elements.
- Overall area - the total area used as the reference when air permeability is related to the full curtain walling specimen.
- Openable parts - the moving parts of the curtain walling that are tested separately from the fixed areas.
Who uses EN 12152:2023/prA1?
EN 12152:2023/prA1 is used by people working on curtain walling and façade performance. That typically includes designers, manufacturers, testing laboratories, quality managers, and buyers who need to compare air permeability results and class claims. It is also useful for specifiers and project teams that have to define how curtain walling is to be tested and reported.
What changed in EN 12152:2023/prA1 from the previous edition?
EN 12152:2023/prA1 modifies EN 12152:2023 in these stated ways:
- Clause 3.4: the note on air permeability is rewritten
- Clause 3.5: the definition of fixed joint is replaced
- Clause 3.7: the term and definition of openable joint are replaced
- Clause 5: the requirements text is replaced
- Figure 1: the key for Y2 is corrected
- Clause 7: the classification text is revised
- Figure 3: the key is replaced
- Figure 3: the title is changed
The amendment text also states that the former EN 12152:2002 is superseded by the EN 12152:2023 version, and that existing test results according to EN 12152:2002 could still be considered valid against that version.
Which standards are used with EN 12152:2023/prA1?
- EN 13830 - identifies the curtain walling products to which this document applies.
- EN 12207 - provides the basis for the moving casement or sash joints referenced in the definition of openable joints.
These references matter because EN 12152:2023/prA1 is used with a defined product family and with an external joint definition for openable elements.
What does the EN 12152:2023/prA1 document contain?
The document contains the European foreword and eight short modification clauses. Its technical content updates definitions in Clause 3, requirements in Clause 5, and classification in Clause 7, and it revises the keys and title of Figures 1 and 3. Where class limits and pressure steps are involved, the document points readers to Tables 1 and 2 and uses Figure 3 to separate fixed joints from openable-part joints for testing and reporting.
