Overview

EN 1266:2002 is a CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard that sets requirements and test methods for independent gas‑fired convection heaters that incorporate a fan to assist transportation of combustion air and/or flue gases. It covers appliances fitted with fan‑assisted atmospheric burners and fully pre‑mixed burners, including live fuel effect types. The standard addresses construction, safety, fitness for purpose, rational use of energy, classification and marking for type‑tested appliances with a nominal heat input up to 20 kW.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and appliance types: Applies to wall‑mounted, free‑standing or built‑in independent convection heaters and to appliance types listed in the standard (e.g., B12, C32, etc.). Excludes certain open‑fronted, forced‑draught, ducted‑air appliances and appliances installed via a closure plate.
  • Constructional requirements: Conversion to different gases, materials and methods of construction, accessibility for use and maintenance, and connection requirements.
  • Gas and combustion circuits: Soundness tests for gas and combustion circuits, supply of combustion air, evacuation of combustion products and flue handling.
  • Controls and safety devices: Adjusters, ignition systems, flame supervision devices, air proving devices, pressure governors and safety behavior during power or energy interruption.
  • Electrical and mechanical components: Requirements for electrical equipment, motors and fans, and temperature limits for working surfaces.
  • Performance & testing: Standardised test methods for heat input, combustion quality, flame stability, spillage monitoring (type B appliances), soot/sooting, NOx calculation methods (annex), and efficiency measurement.
  • Marking and instructions: Mandatory appliance marking, labelling and user/installation instructions to ensure safe installation and operation.
  • Annexes & harmonization: Includes normative and informative annexes (classification, ducts, spillage tests, ignition circuits, national situations) and an informative annex mapping clauses to EU Directives (e.g., Directive 90/396/EEC).

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of gas‑fired convection heaters - for product design, type testing and CE conformity.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - for applying harmonised test methods and performance verification.
  • Regulatory authorities and product assessors - for safety and compliance evaluation against European requirements.
  • Installers and specifiers - to understand marking, installation constraints and safe operation instructions.
  • R&D and product development teams - to ensure products meet energy efficiency, combustion and emission expectations.
