Overview

EN 613:2021/prA1 is a European standard published by CEN that specifies the essential requirements and test methods for independent closed-fronted gas-fired heaters of types B11, C11, C31, and C91. These heaters incorporate natural draught burners and are designed for connection to open flues or devices that evacuate combustion products, operating with a nominal heat input not exceeding 20 kW. This standard ensures safety, construction quality, energy efficiency, and proper marking for such gas-fired appliances.

The standard covers appliances that are wall-mounted, free-standing, or built-in and applies specifically to closed-fronted models of the types B11AS, B11BS, B11CS, C11, C31, and C91. It excludes open-fronted appliances, decorative fuel effect models, catalytic combustion heaters, appliances with mechanically assisted combustion air supply or exhaust, ducted-air appliances, and those installed using closure plates.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
EN 613:2021/prA1 focuses on closed-fronted gas heaters with natural draught burners connected to open or balanced flues. It applies to certain B11 and C-type appliances with nominal heat inputs up to 20 kW.

  • Safety Requirements
The standard requires the use of appropriate materials for gas-carrying components, proper accessibility for operation and maintenance, and specific flame supervision and safety devices like pressure regulators, thermostats, and overheat limiters.

  • Construction and Materials
Materials used must maintain functional integrity throughout a reasonable appliance lifespan, including resistance to heat and gas corrosion. Elastomeric materials must comply with standards for contact with gaseous fuels.

  • Testing and Compliance
EN 613 specifies test methods for operational performance, safety shutoffs, flame stability, and emissions such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Appliances must pass tests under normal and blocked flue conditions.

  • Marking and Documentation
Appliances must have clear marking showing type and gas category, electrical supply information when applicable, and relevant safety instructions to ensure correct installation and use.

  • Classification and Amendments
The standard classifies appliances based on flue evacuation methods and pressure soundness classes. The 2025 amendment improves normative references, clarifies terminology, updates testing procedures, and aligns with recent EU legislation (Regulation 2016/426/EU).

Applications

EN 613:2021/prA1 is crucial for manufacturers, installers, and regulatory bodies involved with gas-fired heating appliances designed for residential and light commercial heating applications. Typical practical uses include:

  • Residential Heating Solutions
Installing independent gas heaters in homes that require safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant space heating without complex mechanical ventilation systems.

  • Commercial and Institutional Buildings
Use in small-scale commercial environments where closed-fronted gas heaters with natural draught burners are appropriate and cost-effective.

  • Quality Assurance and Certification
Assisting manufacturers in meeting harmonized European safety and energy performance requirements, enabling market access and consumer confidence.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Helping conformity assessment bodies and authorities ensure appliances meet EU directives and national standards focused on combustion safety and emissions control.

Related Standards

EN 613:2021/prA1 references and aligns with several complementary standards critical for gas-fired appliance design and testing:

  • EN 509:1999 - Standards for decorative fuel effect gas appliances, which are excluded from EN 613 applicability.
  • EN 88-1:2022+A1:2023 - Safety and control devices including pressure regulators.
  • EN 125:2022+A1:2024 - Requirements for gas safety valves and flame supervision devices.
  • EN 161:2022+A1:2025 - Thermostats and limiters for gas appliances.
  • EN 298:2022 - Automatic burner control systems.
  • EN IEC 60335-1:2023 - General safety requirements for household electrical appliances.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-102:2024 - Specific requirements for gas, oil, and solid-fuel burning appliances with electrical connections.
  • EN 60529:1991 - Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP codes).

For detailed compliance with EU Regulation 2016/426/EU on gas appliances, Annex ZA of EN 613 provides an informative correlation.
