Overview
EN 860:2007/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment concerning the safety of woodworking machines - one side thickness planing machines. Prepared by CEN/TC 142, this prA1 document updates EN 860:2007 and aligns the standard with recent normative references and the requirements of the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). Note: as a prA1 draft it is distributed for review and is subject to change until formally adopted.
Key topics and requirements
- Normative references updated - replaces earlier editions of control-system standards with EN ISO 13849-1:2008 and EN ISO 13849-2:2008 throughout the standard.
- Ergonomics & handling - machine components with a mass over 25 kg must include attachments (e.g., lifting lugs) to allow safe transport, assembly, dismantling and scrapping and to avoid uncontrolled movement or overturning.
- Marking requirements - name and address of the manufacturer (and authorised representative where applicable), year of construction, and machinery/series designation must be marked on the machine.
- Instruction handbook additions - expanded content to be provided to users, including:
- Note that noise emission information should also appear in sales literature.
- Instructions to prevent overturning/falling during transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping.
- Procedures to follow in case of accident or breakdown, and safe unblocking methods if blockages may occur.
- Specification of spare parts that affect operator health and safety.
- Conformity & Annexes - modified Annex ZA and a new informative Annex ZB explain the relationship with the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and list which clauses give a presumption of conformity (with some specified exceptions).
Practical applications and users
Who uses this standard:
- Machine manufacturers designing or updating one-side thickness planing machines for the European market.
- Product compliance and CE marking teams verifying conformity with the Machinery Directive.
- Safety engineers and risk assessors implementing guarding, ergonomics, lifting points and control-system architecture per EN ISO 13849.
- Technical authors preparing instruction handbooks, maintenance and transport procedures.
- Purchasers, installers and maintenance personnel who need to understand marking, lifting provisions and safe unblocking/servicing instructions.
How it is applied:
- Integrate updated safety requirements into machine design, markings and documentation.
- Use the normative cross-references (EN ISO 13849 series) to design control systems and safety functions.
- Provide compliant instruction manuals and sales literature with noise and safety-related information to support conformity claims.
