Overview

EN 13745:2004 - Surfaces for sports areas - Determination of specular reflectance is a CEN method for measuring the specular (directed) reflectance of certain indoor sports floor surfaces. The standard defines the apparatus, test-piece preparation, conditioning, measurement procedure and reporting format so that specular reflectance values are reproducible and comparable across laboratories and manufacturers.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Method for determination of specular reflectance of indoor sports-area surfaces.
  • Principle: A collimated incident beam illuminates a test piece mounted in an integrating sphere; the total reflected flux is measured by a photoelectric cell.
  • Apparatus:
    • Integrating sphere with matt white interior and baffles; sample and entrance ports centered on the same great circle with at least 170° arc between them.
    • Sample port limited to ≤ 4% of the sphere’s internal reflecting area and subtending ~8° at the entrance port.
    • Baffles and a reflectance standard integrated into the sphere wall to prevent direct light paths.
    • Light source: tungsten or tungsten–halogen with filters to match one of the CIE illuminants (A, C or D65) per ISO/CIE 10526. The beam must be substantially unidirectional (max ray angle ≈ 3°).
    • Photoelectric cell(s) positioned about 90° ± 10° from the entrance port with spectral response approximating V(λ).
  • Mounting & geometry: Angle of incidence on the test piece between 80° and 85° to capture specular reflection while avoiding light loss through the entrance port.
  • Test pieces & conditioning: Three circular specimens (diameter = sample port) conditioned ≥ 3 hours at 23 °C ± 3 °C, unless otherwise specified.
  • Procedure & results: Measurements include dark reading, a trapped-beam reference, incident intensity and reflected intensity for each specimen. Reflectance is expressed as a percentage using the measured photoelectric outputs and the mean of three specimens.
  • Reporting: Test reports must reference EN 13745:2004 and include surface ID, light source/filter, instrument make/model, test temperature and mean reflectance.

Applications

  • Assessing floor finishes, coatings and materials for indoor sports halls where glare, visual comfort and lighting performance matter.
  • Quality control in manufacturing of sports flooring and coatings.
  • Specification and verification during procurement and installation for sports facilities, gyms and indoor arenas.

Who uses this standard

  • Flooring manufacturers and product developers
  • Test laboratories and quality-control engineers
  • Facility managers, architects and specifiers responsible for indoor sports installations
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies within CEN member countries

Related standards
