Overview
EN ISO 6270-2:2025 - "Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to humidity - Part 2: Condensation (in-cabinet exposure with heated water reservoir)" - defines reproducible test conditions and procedures for exposing coated test specimens to condensation-water atmospheres inside a climatic cabinet with a heated water reservoir. The standard establishes how to create constant or alternating condensation atmospheres so results from different laboratories are comparable. It does not cover specimen shape, preparation, test duration or result assessment.
Key topics and requirements
- Test atmospheres (designation):
- CH - Condensation with constant humidity
- AHT - Alternating humidity and air temperature
- AT - Alternating air temperature
- IC - Intermittent condensation (newly included from ISO 11503)
- Apparatus and setup: requirements for a climatic chamber, installation, and a heated water reservoir; devices for accommodating specimens and ensuring chamber ventilation and loading are appropriate.
- Procedure elements: start-up, specimen arrangement and spacing (now recommendations rather than strict requirements), filling of floor trough, verification of condensation formation (simplified procedure included), defined test sequences (CH, AHT, AT, IC), permitted interruptions and end-of-test handling.
- Evaluation and precision: guidance on recording conditions and reporting to support reproducibility between laboratories; normative references and annex for condensation-water comparison quantity.
- Normative references and terminology: references include ISO 3270 (conditioning temperatures/humidities) and ISO 4618 (vocabulary).
Practical applications
- Assessing humidity resistance of coatings and varnishes used on metal, wood and other substrates.
- Quality control and batch verification in paint manufacturing.
- Comparative performance testing during product development and R&D.
- Supporting claims for corrosion protection and environmental durability.
- Providing standardized conditioning prior to further evaluation (e.g., visual assessment using ISO 4628 series or contract-specific assessment methods).
Who should use this standard
- Coating and paint manufacturers (quality, R&D, product development).
- Independent testing and certification laboratories performing humidity/condensation tests.
- OEMs and specifiers who require validated humidity-resistance data for material selection.
- Regulatory bodies and procurement teams needing harmonized test methods for tendering and compliance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at

Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee
SC 9, General test methods for paints and varnishes, in collaboration with the European Committee for
Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 139, Paints and varnishes, in accordance with the
Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 6270-2:2017) and ISO 11503:1995, which
have been technically revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— intermittent condensation (IC) cycle from ISO 11503 has been added;
— chamber ventilation and specimen loading requirements have been clarified;
— spacing requirements for specimens have been changed from required to recommendations, and the
objective of spacing has been clarified;
— a simplified procedure has been added for condensation verification, and the previous procedure has
been moved to Annex A;
— the normative references have been updated.
A list of all parts in the ISO 6270 series can be found on the ISO website.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.

ISO 6270-2:2025(en)
Introduction
This document is intended to give consistent conditions and procedures for the conditioning of pre-prepared
test specimens which are evaluated for defects. Such defects can develop when they are subjected to humid
ambient atmospheres such as constant condensation-water atmospheres or alternating condensation-water
atmospheres.
The tests are designed to clarify the behaviour of the test specimens in humid ambient atmospheres and
to pinpoint any defects in the protection of the test specimens against corrosion. The testing of coatings in
these atmospheres does not necessarily give lifetime prediction data.
After conditioning, the test specimens are evaluated either according to agreed documents [e.g. the
appropriate part(s) of the ISO 4628 series] or by procedures agreed between the interested parties.
