Abstract

This European Standard specifies the safety rules for new escalators/moving walks replacing existing escalators/moving walks
installed in existing buildings where, due to limitations enforced by building constraints, certain requirements of EN 115-1:2017 cannot
be fully met.
This standard shall only be used when replacing existing escalators/moving walks where structural constraints within an existing
building make the installation of fully EN115-1:2017 compliant escalators/moving walks impossible. The escalator/moving walk
installer must liaise with the customer and recommend altering the building structure in the first instance and deviations from EN115-1
should only be considered as a last resort.
This standard addresses a number of these constraints, gives requirements for alternative solutions
and covers:
 the replacement of an existing escalator/moving walk by a new one in an existing building.
This standard does not cover:
 construction and installation of a new escalator / moving walk in
 an existing building, which is not replacing an existing escalator/moving walk;
 replacement or modifications of some parts of existing escalator/moving walk, e.g. intruss modernization;
 major modifications of existing escalator/moving walk, e.g. change of the location (see EN 115-1:2017, Annex L);
 other applications outside of the scope of EN 115-1:2017

This document (prEN 115-5:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 10 “lifts,
escalators and moving walks”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with the EN 115-1:2017, which gives the basic
requirements for escalators and moving walks.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZA and ZB, which are integral parts of
this document.
This document is part of the EN 115 series of standards: “Safety of escalators and moving walks”.

Introduction
This document is a type-C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100:2010.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance, etc.).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);

1 Scope

This document only applies when replacing existing escalators/moving walks where structural
constraints within an existing building make the installation of fully EN 115-1:2017 compliant
escalators/moving walks impossible.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN ISO 12100:2010, EN 115-1:2017
and the following apply.

4 Safety Requirements
4.1 General
Escalators/ moving walks replacing existing escalators/moving walks installed in existing buildings shall
comply with the requirements of EN 115-1:2017, as far as not modified or replaced by the safety
requirements of this document. In addition, escalators and moving walks shall be designed according to
the principles of EN ISO 12100:2010 for relevant but not significant hazards, which are not dealt with
within this document.
4.2 Clear Height
Where it is not possible to fulfil the requirements for the clear height according to EN 115-1:2017,
A.2.1/A.2.2 a reduction of h to 2,1 m and/or a reduction of h to 2 m is permitted if the following

requirement and Annex B.2 are fulfilled:
The nominal speed of the escalator/moving walk shall be limited to 0,50 m/s.
4.3 Reduced standing area in machinery spaces, driving station and return station
When it is not possible to fulfil the requirements for the machine spaces according to EN 115-1:2017,
5.8.2, it is permitted to reduce the standing area if all of the following requirements are fulfilled.
4.3.1 In case a standing area is required, the size of the standing area shall be a rectangular area

of 0,12 m with a minimum side dimension of 300 mm. The rectangular area shall be extended to 0,22 m
(580 mm x 380 mm) from the knee level (600 mm above the free-standing area) to the lower level of the
arm (800 mm above the free-standing area), (see Figure 1).
A standing area is not required in cases where all operations (maintenance and inspection) can be
undertaken without the need to enter the driving or return station.

4.3.2 A device shall be provided to detect a person within or entering the reduced standing area. The
device shall be enabled in inspection mode. When this device detects a person in or entering the reduced
standing area it shall prevent restarting. This device shall be according to EN 115-1:2017, 5.12.2.6.1 or
5.12.2.6.2 or 5.12.2.6.3 (SIL 2). Failure lock function according to 5.12.2.8 shall be provided.
