(Main)Safety of escalators and moving walks - Part 5: Replacement of existing escalators/moving walks in existing buildings
Safety of escalators and moving walks - Part 5: Replacement of existing escalators/moving walks in existing buildings
This European Standard specifies the safety rules for new escalators/moving walks replacing existing escalators/moving walks
installed in existing buildings where, due to limitations enforced by building constraints, certain requirements of EN 115-1:2017 cannot
be fully met.
This standard shall only be used when replacing existing escalators/moving walks where structural constraints within an existing
building make the installation of fully EN115-1:2017 compliant escalators/moving walks impossible. The escalator/moving walk
installer must liaise with the customer and recommend altering the building structure in the first instance and deviations from EN115-1
should only be considered as a last resort.
This standard addresses a number of these constraints, gives requirements for alternative solutions
and covers:
the replacement of an existing escalator/moving walk by a new one in an existing building.
This standard does not cover:
construction and installation of a new escalator / moving walk in
an existing building, which is not replacing an existing escalator/moving walk;
replacement or modifications of some parts of existing escalator/moving walk, e.g. intruss modernization;
major modifications of existing escalator/moving walk, e.g. change of the location (see EN 115-1:2017, Annex L);
other applications outside of the scope of EN 115-1:2017

Overview
prEN 115-5 - part of the EN 115 series published by CEN - specifies safety rules for the replacement of existing escalators and moving walks installed in existing buildings when full compliance with EN 115-1:2017 is impossible because of structural or building constraints. This draft standard is intended to be used only as a last resort after the escalator/moving-walk installer has advised on possible building alterations. It defines permitted deviations from EN 115-1 and required alternative protective measures to maintain safety during escalator/moving-walk replacement projects.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies only to complete replacement of an existing escalator/moving walk in an existing building; not for new installations, partial modernizations, or major relocations.
- Deviations and principles
- Deviations allowed only where building constraints prevent EN 115-1 compliance; design must otherwise follow EN ISO 12100 risk principles.
- Clear height
- Where EN 115-1 clear-height rules cannot be met, reduction to 2.1 m or 2.0 m is permitted provided the escalator/moving walk speed is limited to 0.50 m/s and Annex B provisions are met.
- Reduced machinery standing areas
- Defines minimal rectangular standing-area dimensions, requirements for person-detection devices (inspection-mode enablement, restart prevention, SIL 2 level), failure-lock function and mandatory handbook warnings and maintenance instructions.
- Steep escalators (35°) with >6 m rise
- Special measures (max speed 0.5 m/s, step demarcation, contrasting combs, comb and step-gap lighting, increased stop devices, and minimum transition radius or reduced speed) for tunnel-like installations.
- Reduced unrestricted area
- Prohibits shopping trolleys, limits new unit capacity to that of the existing unit or less, ensures new unrestricted area is not smaller than before, and adds emergency stop devices.
- Reduced horizontal step run
- For lower-landing runs ≥ 0.8 m, requires comb lighting, step-gap lighting and contrasting combs/comb inserts.
- Verification and records
- Conformity verified by testing, measurement, calculation and visual inspection; verification records must be kept.
Practical applications and users
- Useful for escalator/moving walk manufacturers, installers, and design engineers working on replacements in constrained historic or retrofitted buildings.
- Relevant to building owners, facility managers, maintenance providers, and safety/regulatory bodies to assess acceptable deviations and required safeguards during replacement projects.
- Helps project teams plan safe retrofits where structural change is impractical while ensuring traceable verification and user information.
