Inorganic fertilizers - Determination of pH of a solution of ammonium nitrate fertilizers of high nitrogen content
This document specifies a method for the determination of pH of a solution of ammonium nitrate fertilizer of high nitrogen content.
This document is applicable to the fertilizing products blends where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following components: fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, growing media, inhibitors, plant biostimulants, and where the following category: inorganic fertilizers is the highest % in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If inorganic fertilizer is not the highest % in the blend, the European Standard for the highest % of the blend applies. In case a fertilizing product blend is composed of components in equal quantity, the user decides which standard to apply. Variations in analytical methods for fertilizing product blends can lead to differing results as some components or matrix interactions can affect the outcome. Validation procedures have shown that developed standard methods are robust and reliable across diverse product compositions, but possible interferences and unexpected results when analysing fertilizing product blends are possible.

Overview
prEN 17759 is a European draft standard developed by CEN, detailing the procedure for the determination of pH in a solution of ammonium nitrate fertilizers with high nitrogen content. This standard is essential for ensuring the consistent quality and safety of inorganic fertilizers, particularly those based on ammonium nitrate. It applies to pure ammonium nitrate fertilizers as well as blends where inorganic fertilizers are the dominant component by mass or volume.
This harmonized method aims to support regulatory compliance, product development, quality assurance, and accurate labeling by providing a clear, reproducible approach to pH analysis in fertilizer products.
Key Topics
Fertilizer Blends Applicability
- Applies to blends containing at least two components (e.g., fertilizers, liming materials, soil improvers, plant biostimulants).
- The standard is used when inorganic fertilizers have the highest proportion in the blend.
- When blend proportions are equal, the end user selects the appropriate standard.
Analytical Reliability and Interferences
- Recognizes potential interferences when testing blends or complex matrices.
- Validated through inter-laboratory studies for robustness and reliability, yet unexpected results are possible with certain product compositions.
Specified Analytical Method
- Outlines the principle of measuring pH using a calibrated pH meter.
- Details required reagents (distilled water, buffer solutions), apparatus, and procedural steps for consistent measurement.
- Includes provisions for calibration, sampling, and precise expression of results.
Reporting and Traceability
- Requires full documentation of sampling, preparation, temperature, and unique test details.
- Adherence to documented repeatability and reproducibility limits, supporting traceability for audits or regulatory review.
Applications
The standardized method described in prEN 17759 is vital for:
Fertilizer Manufacturers
- Ensuring products meet EU and national quality and safety requirements.
- Supporting accurate product labeling and claims regarding fertilizer chemistry.
- Facilitating consistent batch production and quality control processes.
Testing Laboratories
- Providing a recognized, harmonized procedure for analytical services.
- Guaranteeing comparability of results across different labs and regions.
Regulatory Compliance and Market Access
- Assisting compliance with the European Fertilizing Products Regulation (FPR).
- Enabling easier product placement on European and international markets.
Research and Development
- Supporting innovation in fertilizer formulations and new blend development.
- Validating new products or modifications to existing ammonium nitrate fertilizers.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to fertilizer testing and standardization, the following related standards should be considered:
EN 1482-1 / EN 1482-2: Fertilizers, liming materials and inhibitors – Sampling and sample preparation
- Part 1: General sampling provisions
- Part 2: General sample preparation provisions
