Overview

EN 13141-2:2010 - published by CEN - specifies laboratory methods for performance testing of exhaust and supply air terminal devices used in residential ventilation systems. The standard applies to devices with a manually adjustable opening, a fixed opening, or pressure-difference controlled operation. It defines how to measure aerodynamic and acoustic performance so manufacturers, test laboratories and specifiers can produce reliable, comparable data for residential ventilation products.

Key Topics

  • Flow rate / pressure
    • Laboratory measurement of volume flow vs. static pressure to produce flow/pressure characteristic curves across the manufacturer’s operating range. Tests are taken at multiple pressure bands with devices mounted in a test duct or using a flow straightener as required.
  • Air diffusion characteristics (supply devices)
    • Diffusion and distribution performance testing in accordance with EN 12238 to characterise supply-air spread and effectiveness.
  • Acoustic characteristics
    • Noise production: measurement of sound power radiated into a room using a reverberation room (EN ISO 3741 and related methods).
    • Insertion loss: laboratory determination of the reduction in sound pressure level caused by mounting the device (EN ISO 7235, EN ISO 11691 referenced).
    • Sound insulation: testing of paired air terminal devices for transmission of airborne sound.
  • Test installation & uncertainty
    • Defined test setups (test duct, fan, flow meter, pressure taps, flow straightener) and measurement uncertainty limits for pressure and flow to achieve overall accuracy (typical combined uncertainty within a few percent). Test ranges include extraction (–300 Pa to 0 Pa) and supply (0 Pa to +300 Pa).

Applications

  • Product development and R&D for air terminal devices (exhaust and supply vents).
  • Independent test laboratories producing performance certificates and datasheets.
  • HVAC designers and building services engineers selecting terminals for mechanical or natural residential ventilation systems.
  • Acoustic consultants assessing room noise impact and insertion loss of terminals.
  • Compliance and certification activities where validated lab performance data are required for regulatory or tender processes.

Who should use this standard

  • Manufacturers of air terminal devices and ventilation components
  • Accredited testing laboratories and certification bodies
  • Building services engineers, HVAC specifiers and acousticians
  • Regulatory authorities and compliance assessors
