prEN ISO 17078-1
(Main)Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy - Drilling, production and injection equipment - Part 1: Side-pocket mandrels (ISO/DIS 17078-1:2026)
- Abstract
ISO 17078:2004 provides requirements for side-pocket mandrels used in the petroleum and natural gas industry. This part of ISO 17078 includes specifying, selecting, designing, manufacturing, quality control, testing, and preparation for shipping of side-pocket mandrels.
This part of ISO 17078:2004 does not address nor include requirements for end connections between the side-pocket mandrels and the well conduit. The installation and retrieval of side-pocket mandrels is outside the scope of this part of ISO 17078:2004. Additionally, this part of ISO 17078:2004 does not include specifications for centre-set mandrels, or mandrels that employ or support tubing-retrievable flow control devices.
This part of ISO 17078:2004 does not include gas-lift or any other flow-control valves or devices, latches, and/or associated wire line equipment that can or cannot be covered in other ISO specifications.
The side-pocket mandrels to which this part of ISO 17078:2004 refers are independent devices that can accept installation of flow-control or other devices down-hole.

Overview
prEN ISO 17078-1 is a draft standard for the oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy. It focuses on drilling, production, and injection equipment, specifically side-pocket mandrels used in petroleum and natural gas wells.
This standard is important for organizations involved in the design, manufacture, quality control, testing, and shipping preparation of side-pocket mandrels. It supports consistent expectations for equipment used in downhole applications where reliability, material selection, and documented manufacturing practices matter.
The document also reflects current industry needs by addressing standard designs and high pressure and/or high temperature (HPHT) equipment. It is a supplement to API Spec 19G1, 2nd edition (2019) and aligns with ISO and CEN cooperation in standardization.
Key Topics
This draft standard covers practical requirements for side-pocket mandrels, including:
- Specification and selection of side-pocket mandrels
- Design and manufacturing requirements
- Quality control and testing
- Preparation for shipping to protect critical components
- Material selection for demanding environments
- Surface-hardened layer thickness testing
- Packaging requirements for transport and storage
It also includes supplementary requirements for use in high CO2-containing environments, helping support material performance in gas injection and gas production wells. In addition, the standard references sour service conditions and relevant supporting standards for quality and material evaluation.
Important scope limits are also defined. This part does not cover:
- End connections between the mandrel and the well conduit
- Installation and retrieval procedures
- Center-set mandrels
- Tubing-retrievable flow control devices
- Gas-lift valves, latches, or wireline equipment
These boundaries help users understand exactly where the standard applies and where other specifications may be needed.
Applications
Side-pocket mandrels are independent downhole devices that can accept installation of flow-control or other equipment. As a result, prEN ISO 17078-1 is relevant to a wide range of field and engineering activities, such as:
- Oil and gas well completion
- Production system design
- Injection well equipment planning
- Downhole tool manufacturing
- Quality assurance for well intervention equipment
- HPHT and CO2-rich operating environments
For asset owners, manufacturers, and suppliers, the standard offers a useful framework for improving consistency, supporting procurement decisions, and meeting technical requirements in critical well applications.
Related Standards
prEN ISO 17078-1 is closely connected with several referenced standards and documents, including:
- API Spec 19G1, 2nd edition (2019) - the base document supplemented by this draft
- ISO 9000 - quality management fundamentals and vocabulary
- ISO 17348 - materials selection for high CO2 environments
- ISO 18203 - measurement of surface-hardened layer thickness
- API TR 1PER15K-1 - verification and validation of HPHT equipment
For professionals searching for ISO side-pocket mandrel requirements, oil and gas drilling equipment standards, or downhole production equipment specifications, prEN ISO 17078-1 provides a focused and practical reference.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
