(Main)Roll containers - Part 2: General design and safety principles
Roll containers - Part 2: General design and safety principles
This European standard specifies general design and safety principles for the four main styles of roll container - Demountable, Folding, Nesting and Rigid and the seven derived forms as defined in EN 12674-1:1999, "Roll containers - Terminology".
All styles of roll container defined in EN 12674-1 irrespective of the materials from which they are made should conform to the normative parts of this standard.
It is also applicable to dollys, as defined in EN 12674-1, whether or not intended for side frame or post fitment.
It is not applicable to the specialised use of fork lift and reach trucks with purpose-built roll containers.

They comprise apparatus fitted with fixed and/or swivelcastors. The superstructure comprises two or more frames which provide retention for items requiringtransportation and/or distribution.Roll containers are primarily designed for manual handling but may be designed to be moved by pallet trucks thatcomply with ISO 509 "Pallet trucks - Principal dimensions".
However, if alternative base facilities are integratedsuch roll containers may still meet all the requirements of this standard.
The special implications and hazardsposed by elevation and manipulation of roll containers by means of fork lift trucks is specifically excluded from thisstandard, such design features are a matter for the manufacturer and user.Dollies are included in EN 12674 since dollies can be manufactured for side frame fitment and need to be able towithstand additional loading stresses arising from this.
The end use of demountable roll containers and suchdollies are so close as to benefit from common test methods. The measurement of maximum starting force and continuous rolling resistance on a standard reference surfaceand also roll container manoeuvrability tests are specified in Part 3 of this standard.SIST EN 12674-2:2002

Thedimension always expressed first is that dimension (length or width) that is parallel to the direction of motion(designated l or w).
The second dimension is that dimension at 90 to the direction of motion (designated l or w).llllwwww124lwwl3Figure 1 — Plan dimensions – designation of length / width / direction of motionFor a roll container with four swivel castors then the primary direction of motion as intended by the maker takesprecedence, as shown in Figure 1.SIST EN 12674-2:2002
