Overview
FprEN 13075-2 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN Technical Committee 336, focusing on bitumens and bituminous binders. This document specifies a normalized method for determining the fines mixing time of diluted cationic bituminous emulsions under controlled laboratory conditions. Fines mixing time is an important measure for understanding the breaking behaviour of cationic bituminous emulsions, which are widely used in road construction and maintenance.
The procedure is essential for quality control in the production and application of bituminous binders, helping to ensure consistent performance when bituminous emulsions are mixed with mineral fillers during construction processes such as cold-mix asphalt or surface treatments.
Key Topics
- Purpose of the Standard: Establishes a laboratory method for determining the time required for a diluted cationic bituminous emulsion to mix with mineral fines before the emulsion breaks, under specified conditions.
- Safety Considerations: Handling hazardous materials, equipment, and operations requires adherence to health, safety, and environmental practices.
- Reference Fillers: Specifies particular fillers (Forshammer SE, Q92, Sikaisol) with defined physical and chemical characteristics to standardize test results.
- Standardized Test Environment: Requires specific temperature ranges, sample preparation, apparatus, and test methods to ensure repeatability and comparability between laboratories.
- Reporting Requirements: Details mandatory elements in the laboratory test report for traceability and quality assurance.
Applications
The FprEN 13075-2 standard is relevant for:
- Bituminous Emulsion Manufacturers: Ensuring their products meet rigorous European standards for mixability and performance.
- Construction Quality Control: Laboratories and contractors can determine the mixing time for cationic bituminous emulsions with fines, key to optimizing field performance in road surfacing and cold-mix processes.
- Specification Compliance: Engineers and regulators can reference this standardized method to evaluate and accept materials on construction projects.
- Research and Product Development: Facilitates comparative studies and supports innovation in emulsion formulation by providing a clear, uniform testing protocol.
By establishing a harmonized test procedure, FprEN 13075-2 promotes consistency across the industry, ensuring that emulsified bituminous binders used in roadworks behave predictably and meet performance specifications.

prEN 13075-2:2025 includes the following significant changes with respect to EN 13075-2:2016:
a) Clause 5, “Reagents and materials”: in paragraph 5.1 the naming “Caolin” for the Q92 filler, which
could lead to confusion with the mineralogical nature of kaolin, has been removed;
b) Clause 6, “Apparatus”, has been updated and revised, standardizing the use of the metrological
concept of “maximal permissible measurement error” for describing the measurement precision;
c) Annex A, “Characteristics of the reference fillers”, has been revised: the Sikaisol filler, which
production has been disrupted, has been downgraded to the third place in the reference fillers list;
d) in paragraph A2 the particle size distribution envelope of the Q92 filler has been updated and
tightened, thanks to the to process improvements brought by the producer.
