Overview
EN 12899-3:2007 is the CEN (European) standard for fixed, vertical road traffic signs - Part 3: Delineator posts and retroreflectors. It specifies performance requirements and test methods for new delineator posts and retroreflectors (as separate products or combined) intended for use in traffic circulation areas. The standard addresses visual (colorimetric and retroreflective) properties, structural behaviour under static and dynamic loads, safety under vehicle impact and durability following natural weathering. It does not set mandatory colours, dimensions or tolerances.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product scope: Delineator posts (types D1–D4) and retroreflectors (types R1–R3).
- D1–D3 cover ground-fixed posts (D3 = flexible/spring-back), D4 covers posts fixed to structures.
- R1 = retroreflective sheeting, R2 = plastic corner-cube, R3 = biconvex glass.
- Visual performance: Daytime chromaticity coordinates and luminance factors for post surfaces; night-time chromaticity and minimum coefficient of retroreflection (RA) for retroreflectors. Retroreflection requirements account for entrance and observation angles and include colour factors (e.g., white = 1.0, yellow = 0.6, red = 0.2).
- Physical performance:
- Static (wind) loading: specified maximum temporary deflections by class (e.g., WL1, WL2) and maximum permanent deflection limits (generally ≤ 5% of post height above ground line).
- Dynamic impact: material and functional tests to verify integrity, reusability (D2) or return-to-vertical behaviour (D3); crash testing for posts above a mass threshold.
- Corrosion resistance: neutral salt spray testing for metal parts coated with plastics (per ISO 9227); not applicable to hot-dip galvanised parts.
- Durability: Performance levels to be maintained after natural weathering exposure; test methods reference CIE, ISO and CEN documents.
- Marking, conformity & safety: Requirements for labelling, evaluation of conformity and provisions related to the EU Construction Products Directive (Annex ZA and CE marking considerations).
Applications and users
- Road authorities and highway designers for specifying compliant delineators and retroreflectors on public roads and highways.
- Manufacturers and suppliers developing or certifying delineator posts, retroreflective materials and assemblies.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies conducting photometric, mechanical and durability testing.
