EN 13146-2:2012
(Main)Railway applications - Track - Test methods for fastening systems - Part 2: Determination of torsional resistance
General Information
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies a laboratory test procedure to determine the moment necessary to rotate a rail, secured to a sleeper by a rail fastening assembly, through 1° in a plane parallel to the base of the rail. The value obtained can be used in track stability calculations.
The test is not applicable to embedded rails.
This test procedure applies to a complete fastening assembly.

Overview
EN 13146-2:2012 (CEN) defines a laboratory test method to determine the torsional resistance of rail fastening systems. The standard specifies how to establish the moment required to rotate a rail, secured to a sleeper by a complete fastening assembly, through 1° in a plane parallel to the rail base. The value is intended for use in track stability calculations and performance verification. The procedure is not applicable to embedded rails.
Key practical points:
- Applies to a complete fastening assembly (all components, baseplate and pad where appropriate).
- Test generates a moment-versus-angular-displacement curve from which the 1° moment is extracted.
- Typical use: design validation, quality control and track stability assessment.
Key Topics
- Test principle: A transverse load is applied to the rail foot while the sleeper is restrained; rail movement is recorded and load increased until a minimum angular rotation is achieved. The moment corresponding to 1° is determined from the moment/displacement graph.
- Apparatus highlights:
- Rail: short unlaminated section of the intended rail profile.
- Actuator: capable of applying at least 25 kN, at a controlled rate of (2 ± 1) kN/min.
- Displacement measurement: angular accuracy to ±0.1° or linear devices compliant with EN ISO 9513; linear resolution may be ±0.01 mm when used.
- Force measurement: instruments conforming to EN ISO 7500-1 class 1 over the required range.
- Calibration: all measuring systems must have traceable calibration to SI units and be periodically verified.
- Procedure notes:
- The rail is fixed to one rail seat on a sleeper or half-sleeper and the sleeper restrained on a rigid base.
- Tests are performed with fastenings in line or, if offset, with two arrangements as specified.
- The rail is rotated to at least 1.5° during loading; the moment for 1° is then interpolated from the plot of moment vs. angular displacement.
- Load and displacement are recorded continuously; typical measurement tolerances are specified in the standard.
Applications
- Inputs to track stability and lateral-torsional resistance calculations.
- Verification of fastening system performance during design, acceptance testing and quality control.
- Comparative assessment of fastening concepts where torsional behaviour influences track performance under vehicle dynamics.
