Rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics - Determination of resistance to combined shear flexing and rubbing (ISO 5981:2007)
ISO 5981:2007 specifies two methods of evaluating the resistance to combined shear flexing and rubbing of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. Rubbing is either forced by application of a pressure foot (method A), or is caused by simple contact between the faces of the test pieces (method B).
Method B (without application of the pressure foot) is preferred in all cases where the foot would damage the test piece through an abrasive effect where this is not required, e.g. materials with sticky surfaces, light coatings such as polyurethanes on rough surfaces.
The test may be carried out on products as delivered or after pre-treatments such as wetting or accelerated ageing.
NOTE The results obtained using method A and method B cannot be compared as there is no correlation between the two methods.

Overview
EN ISO 5981:2007 (ISO 5981:2007) specifies laboratory methods for assessing the resistance to combined shear flexing and rubbing of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. The standard defines two test procedures: Method A (rubbing forced by a pressure foot) and Method B (rubbing by simple face-to-face contact). Method B is preferred when a pressure foot would cause unwanted abrasion (for example, sticky surfaces or light polyurethane coatings). Tests can be performed on as‑delivered products or after pre‑treatments such as wetting or accelerated ageing. Note: results from Method A and Method B are not comparable.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: a specimen is subjected to repeated mild abrasive rubs while being flexed by a rubbing machine; damage is assessed visually.
- Apparatus: a rubbing machine with two parallel clamps providing counter‑reciprocating motion and an optional pressure foot. Key machine parameters (specified tolerances):
- Distance between clamps: 12 mm ± 0.3 mm
- Movement amplitude: 40 mm ± 1 mm
- Frequency: 2.4 to 3.0 cycles/s
- Optional foot load: 5 N ± 0.1 N (or 10 N ± 0.2 N by agreement)
- Clamps and foot: polished contact surfaces (Ra = 0.4 μm), rounded edges (radius ~1 mm) to avoid cutting, foot centered and free from clamp contact.
- Test pieces: six specimens per series (three longitudinal, three transverse); typical dimensions 100 mm × 50 mm (110 mm length allowed by agreement for low‑elasticity coatings).
- Pre‑conditioning and timing: minimum 16 hours between manufacture and testing; conditioning and atmosphere rules follow referenced standards.
- Results: damage is evaluated visually and reported; method-specific results cannot be intercompared.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: textile and coated‑fabric manufacturers, quality control laboratories, product development teams, procurement/specification engineers, and certification bodies.
- Practical uses:
- Compare coating formulations or surface treatments for durability
- Validate material performance for applications such as protective clothing, inflatable devices, tarpaulins, upholstery, and technical membranes
- Support supplier quality agreements and acceptance testing
- Guide R&D decisions on coatings (e.g., polyurethane vs thicker rubber coatings)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 5981 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 45, Rubber and rubber products, Subcommittee
SC 4, Products (other than hoses).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 5981:1997), which has been technically
revised.

The article discusses the EN ISO 5981:2007 standard, which focuses on evaluating the resistance of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics to combined shear flexing and rubbing. The standard provides two methods for testing this resistance. Method A involves applying pressure with a foot, while method B involves rubbing the test pieces together without using a foot. Method B is preferred when the foot may cause damage, such as with sticky surfaces or light coatings on rough surfaces. The test can be conducted on the products as is or after pre-treatments like wetting or accelerated ageing. It's important to note that the results obtained from method A and method B cannot be compared because there is no correlation between the two methods.
