Water quality - Design and use of quantitative samplers for benthic macro-invertebrates on stony substrata in shallow freshwaters (ISO 8265:1988)

Gives guidance on the equipment and procedures for the sampling by quadrat samplers in waters of depth less than 500 mm, although methods are described to permit sampling, under certain conditions, in a water depth of up to 1 m. The procedures are applicable to all accessible aquatic habitats in rivers, streams and estuaries where current velocities in excess of 0,1 m/s would be expected.

Diese Internationale Norm gibt Hinweise zur Ausrüstunf und zu Verfahren für quantitative Probenahme benthischer Makro-Invertebraten durch quadratische Probenahmegeräte in Gewässern, die weniger als 500mm tief sind. Es werden aber auch Verfahren beschrieben, die unter bestimmten Bedingungen die Probenahme bei einer Wassertiefe bis zu 1m erlauben.

La présente Norme internationale donne des recommandations sur les équipements et modes opératoires pour le prélèvement quantitatif de macro-invertébrés par des bacs échantillonneurs dans une profondeur d'eau inférieure à 500 mm, bien que les méthodes décrites permettent un prélèvement, dans certaines conditions, dans une profondeur d'eau allant jusqu'à 1 m. Les modes opératoires sont applicables aux prélèvements de tous les habitats aquatiques accessibles dans les rivières, les courants et les estuaires où les vitesses devraient dépasser 0,1 m/s, mais on peut utiliser les échantillonneurs, après modification, dans des endroits de faible vitesse de courant, tels que mares et lacs (voir l'annexe A). Le prélèvement peut être difficile ou impossible lorsque le substrat se compose de grosses pierres et de gros galets ou de plans de macrophytes denses (plantes à racines). Les résultats du prélèvement fournissent des données quantitatives sur la présence, la diversité et l'abondance relative de taxons.

ISO 8265 : 1988 (El Introduction The “Surber”l) and “cylinder” Samplers described in this International Standard are designed to remove benthic macro-invertebrates from a defined shape and area of Substrate of a bed of a water body. Hence these Samplers are sometimes called quadrat Samplers. They may be regarded as quantitative counterparts of the handnet sampling method described in ISO 7828, Water qua/-@ - Methods of biological sampling - Guidance on handnet sampling of aquatic benthic macro-invertebrates. They are usually used in water with a depth of less than 500 mm and are thus restricted to use in shallow water, particularly the “Surber”, which should preferably not be submerged. Although the Samplers tan also be used in deeper water by a diver, it must be emphasised that they were not originally designed for that purpose.
