Binders for paints and varnishes - Determination of saponification value - Titrimetric method (ISO 3681:2018)

This document specifies a titrimetric method for determining the esterified-acid content in binders for paints and varnishes, free acids and acid anhydrides being necessarily included in the result obtained.
Because different binders vary in their resistance to saponification, this document is of limited applicability. If necessary, completeness of saponification can be checked by repeating the test under more severe conditions achieved by the use of longer saponification time, more concentrated potassium hydroxide solution, or a higher-boiling alcohol as solvent.
Annex A specifies a procedure suitable for binders that saponify with difficulty.
The method is not applicable to those materials that show further reaction with alkalis beyond normal saponification.

Bindemittel für Beschichtungsstoffe - Bestimmung der Verseifungszahl - Titrimetrisches Verfahren (ISO 3681:2018)

Dieses Dokument legt ein titrimetrisches Verfahren zum Bestimmen des Gehaltes an veresterten Säuren in Bindemitteln für Lacke und Anstrichstoffe fest. Freie Säuren und Säureanhydride werden dabei zwangsläufig ebenfalls erfasst.
Da sich Bindemittel in ihrer Verseifungsbeständigkeit unterscheiden, ist dieses Dokument nur begrenzt anwendbar. Falls erforderlich, kann geprüft werden, ob die Verseifung vollständig verlaufen ist, indem die Prüfung unter verschärften Bedingungen wiederholt wird. Solche Bedingungen können durch eine längere Verseifungsdauer, eine konzentriertere Kaliumhydroxidlösung oder einen höher siedenden Alkohol als Löse-mittel erreicht werden.
Anhang A legt ein geeignetes Verfahren für schwerverseifbare Bindemittel fest.
Das Verfahren ist nicht auf Stoffe anwendbar, die neben der Verseifung weitere Reaktionen mit Alkalien ein-gehen.

Le présent document prescrit une méthode titrimétrique pour la détermination de la teneur en acides estérifiés des liants pour peintures et vernis tenant compte nécessairement des acides libres et des anhydrides d'acide.
En raison des variations de la résistance à la saponification des différents liants, le domaine d'application du présent document est limité. Si nécessaire, la saponification complète peut être vérifiée en recommençant l'essai dans des conditions plus strictes avec une durée de saponification plus longue, une solution d'hydroxyde de potassium plus concentrée ou un alcool à point d'ébullition plus élevé comme solvant.
L'Annexe A spécifie un mode opératoire adapté aux liants difficilement saponifiables.
La méthode n'est pas applicable aux produits présentant une réaction supplémentaire aux alcalis, après la saponification normale.

Ta dokument določa titracijsko metodo za določevanje vsebnosti esterificiranih kislin v vezivih in lakih, prostih kislin in anhidridov kislin, ki morajo biti vključeni v pridobljenih rezultatih.
Ker se različna veziva razlikujejo v odpornosti na umiljenje, je uporaba tega dokumenta
omejena. Po potrebi je mogoče popolnost umiljenja preveriti s ponovitvijo preskusa v
v težjih pogojih, kar se doseže z uporabo daljšega časa umiljenja, večjo koncentracijo raztopine kalijevega
hidroksida ali topilom v obliki alkohola z višjim vreliščem.
Dodatek A določa postopek, primeren za veziva, ki se težko umilijo.
Metoda se ne uporablja za tiste materiale, ki še naprej reagirajo z alkali, kar presega običajno
umiljenje.

This document (EN ISO 3681:2018) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35 "Paints and
varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 “Paints and varnishes” the
secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by June 2019, and conflicting national standards shall be
withdrawn at the latest by June 2019.
