EN 4500-005:2026 is a CEN standard in the Aerospace series that gives the specific rules for drafting and presenting material standards for steels. It tells standards writers how to build a steel material standard for aerospace applications, including the title, scope, references, terms, Table 1 and the supporting annexes.
What does EN 4500-005:2026 specify?
EN 4500-005:2026 specifies the drafting rules for European standards covering aerospace steel materials. It is part of the EN 4500 series on metallic materials for aerospace applications, and it is written for the preparation of material standards rather than for the product itself.
The document is organized into four main clauses and five informative annexes. Clause 4 contains the rules for drafting, while Annexes A to E give completion examples and model text for the title page, introduction, scope and requirements, Table 1, and bibliography.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Completion of title page |
| B | Completion of the introduction |
| C | Completion of the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements |
| D | Completion of Table 1 |
| E | Completion of the bibliography |
Clause 4.1 says the annex examples are only illustrations of the drafting rules and may not correspond to actual standardized EN semi-finished products. Clause 4.1 also notes that technological development may require terms beyond those listed.
What are the key requirements of EN 4500-005:2026?
EN 4500-005:2026 is mainly a template standard, so its key requirements are about what a steel material standard shall contain and how each item shall be written. The most important part is Table 1, because Clause 4.4 and Annex C state that the requirements of Table 1 apply and that the documents listed in Table 1 shall be applied.
How the title and identification are drafted
- Clause 4.2 requires the title to be completed using the prescribed wording structure. In practice, this means the title must identify the steel, the melting method, the form and any additional information in a controlled way.
- Clause 4.2.2 lists the permitted melting terms, such as air melted, vacuum induction melted, vacuum refined, vacuum arc remelted, electro-slag remelted and consumable electrode remelted. This matters because the melting route is often part of product definition and traceability.
- Clause 4.2.3 gives the allowed form qualifiers for sheets, bars, sections, tubes, wires, forgings, castings, rings and other product forms. A purchaser or engineer can use these terms to see exactly which product form the standard covers.
- Clause 4.2.4 lists examples of additional information entries such as structural applications, pressure applications, fasteners, machining, bearings, welding, carburizing or other thermo-chemical treatment, and nitriding. These entries help narrow the intended use.
How Table 1 is built
- Clause 4.5 makes Table 1 the central structure for the steel standard. It covers material designation, chemical composition, melting method, form, production method, further intended processing, dimensions, delivery condition, test conditions, inspection and qualification.
- Clause 4.5.2 fixes the order for chemical elements. The practical effect is that compositions are written in a consistent sequence, which makes comparison between standards easier.
- Clause 4.5.7 requires limiting dimensions for steels to be based on the equivalent diameter D from EN 10083-1. This matters when a product is not a simple uniform shape, because the same size basis must be used for comparison.
- Clause 4.5.10 and Clause 4.5.12 control delivery condition and use condition terms. The standard uses states such as annealed, solution treated, hardened, tempered, sub-zero treated, cold worked, descaled, machined and ground, so the reader knows the condition in which the product is supplied or assessed.
- Clause 4.5.17 to 4.5.26 provide the property lines for tensile, hardness, shear strength, bending, impact strength and creep. In practice, this is where the standard says which properties may be specified and how they are grouped.
- Clause 4.5.28 to 4.5.33 cover marking inspection, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use and product qualification. This helps a drafting committee separate identification, inspection and qualification information from core material properties.
What is excluded or treated as not applicable
- Clause 4.5.16 states that thickness of cladding on each face is not applicable to steel.
- Clause 4.5.25 says line 27 is not used.
- Clause 4.5.30 says line 97 is not used.
These points matter because they keep steel standards from carrying unnecessary fields that belong to other material families.
How examples and qualification are handled
- Annex C states that the documents listed in Table 1 shall be applied. This makes the references in the table part of the technical content, not just background reading.
- Clause 4.5.26 and Clause 4.5.27 point to the reference heat treatment and the completion of lines 30 to 94 in accordance with EN 4500-001, with Annex E supporting the bibliography.
- Clause 4.5.33 and Annex D show how product qualification is written and how the qualification programme is agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. That is important for release, approval and contractual alignment.
What terms does EN 4500-005:2026 define?
- Material designation - the identifier used for the steel in Table 1, such as the example designation shown in the annexes.
- Method of melting - the melting route used to make the steel, written with the controlled terms listed in Clause 4.2.2.
- Delivery condition - the state in which the product is supplied, including conditions such as annealed, solution treated, hardened, tempered or cold worked.
- Heat treatment - the thermal treatment stated for delivery, use or reference conditions, so the standard can link properties to a defined material state.
- Reference heat treatment - the heat treatment used as the benchmark for the specified properties and qualification data.
- Dimensional standard - the dimensional document named in Table 1 to govern the product dimensions.
- Equivalent diameter D - the size basis used for limiting dimensions of steels in accordance with EN 10083-1.
- Product qualification - the approval route for the product standard, tied to a qualification programme agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
Who uses EN 4500-005:2026?
EN 4500-005:2026 is used by technical committees and standards writers who prepare aerospace steel material standards. It is also used by material engineers, quality managers, purchasers and conformity teams who review how a steel standard is structured and what it requires.
In practice, it helps people who have to draft or check the wording for composition, condition, testing, inspection and qualification. Laboratories and test planners can also use it when they need to understand how test samples, test pieces and test methods are called up in a steel material standard.
What changed in EN 4500-005:2026 from the previous edition?
EN 4500-005:2026 supersedes EN 4500-005:2024. The foreword states these changes compared with the previous edition:
- addition of the missing text in the scope
- addition of lines 4.3 “Further intended processing” and 5.2 “Dimensional standard” in the body of the document and in Annex D
- addition of introductory sentences to Table 1 in Annex C to show that the table is normative and that all listed documents shall be applied
- editorial clarification of the normative or informative status of references to other documents and annexes
- restructuring of the document and simplification of the template to achieve a single continuous table
Which standards are used with EN 4500-005:2026?
EN 4500-005:2026 relies on three normative references in its text:
- EN 4259 - gives the general terms and definitions for aerospace metallic materials.
- EN 4500-001 - provides the general drafting rules for aerospace material standards and is used throughout Clause 4.
- EN 10083-1 - supplies the basis for equivalent diameter and general technical delivery conditions for quenching and tempering steels.
The introduction also places EN 4500-005 within the wider EN 4258 series organization, and the bibliography points to related EN 4500 and EN 4700 parts that support drafting and testing.
What does the EN 4500-005:2026 document contain?
EN 4500-005:2026 contains the drafting template for aerospace steel material standards, including title-page wording, introduction text and the model scope. It then gives the structure of Table 1, which is the core of the document and carries the material, composition, processing, dimensions, tests, inspection and qualification lines.
The annexes provide worked completion examples for a steel case based on 100Cr6 (1.3505). These examples show how the table can be filled for properties such as tensile behavior, hardness, impact strength, hardenability, microstructure, inclusion content, fatigue, density, elastic modulus and crack propagation.
The bibliography also gathers the supporting standards used in drafting and testing, including the aerospace series parts, test methods and external standards such as EN ISO 642, EN ISO 3651-1, EN ISO 12737, ISO 9649 and ASTM E45. In practice, this helps the writer or reviewer trace each line of Table 1 to the method or companion standard that supports it.
