EN 4500-001:2026 is a CEN European Standard in the Aerospace series. It sets the general rules for drafting and presenting metallic material standards for aerospace applications, so it is mainly a document for people who write, review, or apply those material standards.
The standard tells you how to build a material specification so that the title, scope, test requirements, qualification and related references are presented in a consistent way. In practice, it matters because the same drafting structure is used across the EN 4500 series and the result is meant to be unambiguous for manufacturers, purchasers, and test laboratories.
What does EN 4500-001:2026 specify?
EN 4500-001:2026 specifies the rules for drafting and presenting metallic material standards for aerospace applications. This Part 001 provides the general rules framework that applies across the EN 4500 series.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 Scope
- Clause 2 Normative references
- Clause 3 Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 Rules for drafting a European standard for aerospace metallic materials
- Annex A and Annex B
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Normative template for Table 1 |
| Annex B | Normative allocation of numbers to optional lines |
What are the key requirements of EN 4500-001:2026?
EN 4500-001:2026 is mainly a drafting standard. Its key requirements tell authors how to structure a material standard, which information is mandatory in the main table, and how to present test and qualification data so that users can apply it consistently.
How the standard must be structured
Clause 4.1 sets the document structure: title, introduction, Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Requirements, Bibliography if appropriate, and Annexes if appropriate. This matters because the standard is not just about content, but also about where that content appears.
Clause 4.2 requires the title to identify the semi-finished product unambiguously in the use condition. It also says the same title shall not be used for different material standards, and overlapping mechanical property limits are normally not permitted for otherwise identical material standards.
Clause 4.4 requires the Scope to repeat the title information in the same format and add “for aerospace applications”. That gives readers a fast check that the document covers the material family and product form they are looking for.
How Table 1 is to be used
Clause 4.7 makes Table 1 the core normative element. The text says Table 1 shall be applied, and the documents listed in it shall be applied. Mandatory lines are 1 to 26 and 95, 96, 98, 99 and 100; lines 27 to 94 are optional.
This is important in practice because a drafter knows exactly which data must always be completed and which characteristics are added only when relevant. If space is tight, the standard allows notes or repeated lines, and it requires an em dash on lines that are not needed.
Clause 4.7.1 also fixes general drafting rules: requirements already covered by the technical specification or test method are not repeated, values must use the correct minimum or maximum signs, and symbols and units follow the ISO 80000 series. That keeps the material standard concise and avoids conflicting instructions.
What the main data lines cover
Clause 4.7.2 to 4.7.18 cover the identification and basic definition of the material. These lines include:
- material designation
- chemical composition, including min/max values and “others”
- method of melting
- form, production method, and further intended processing
- technical specification and dimensional standard
- delivery condition and heat treatment
- use condition and heat treatment
- test sample, test piece, and test heat treatment
- dimensions concerned
- direction of test piece
For the reader, this means the standard can define not only the material itself but also how it is made, delivered, and tested.
Clause 4.7.11 and 4.7.12 use delivery condition wording and delivery condition codes from EN 2032-2. Clause 4.7.13 defines how use condition is stated, including the case where it is identical to the delivery condition. Clause 4.7.16 allows a reference heat treatment on line 29 when that is needed for testing.
Which properties and tests are controlled
Clauses 4.7.20 to 4.7.25 cover tensile properties, hardness, shear strength, bending, impact strength, and creep. These lines specify the test temperature, the property symbol, and how the result is to be presented.
This is useful because a material standard can say exactly what has to be measured and under what conditions. For example, tensile lines cover proof stress, tensile strength, elongation and reduction of area; impact lines cover KU or KV and the notch direction; creep lines cover temperature, time, stress, elongation and rupture values.
Optional lines and qualification
Clause 4.7.29 allows optional lines 30 to 94 when a material standard needs extra characteristics. Annex B lists the available optional line titles, including topics such as microstructure, grain size, corrosion, fatigue, density, weldability, porosity, and formability.
Clause 4.7.30 to 4.7.36 cover marking inspection, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use, and product qualification. Line 100 is especially important because it sets out how semi-finished product qualification is handled, including cases where a qualification programme is agreed between manufacturer and purchaser or referred to EN 2043.
What terms does EN 4500-001:2026 define?
EN 4500-001:2026 uses the terms and definitions from EN 4258 and EN 4259, and it also relies on several working terms in the drafting rules and tables.
- Delivery condition - the thermo-mechanical and heat treatment state applied to the semi-finished product before delivery.
- Use condition - the heat treatment condition that applies when the semi-finished product is intended for use, either before further working or in the final component.
- Test sample - the material taken from stock or made separately for testing, such as cut from, forged from, separately cast, or appended test bars.
- Test piece - the specimen prepared from the test sample for the actual test, either machined before heat treatment or heat treated before machining.
- Reference heat treatment - the heat treatment stated on line 29 when line 8.3 refers to it for testing.
- Proof stress (Rp0,2) - the tensile property reported on line 13 at the test temperature.
- Tensile strength (Rm) - the tensile property reported on line 14 at the test temperature.
- Reduction of area (Z) - the tensile ductility result reported as a percentage on line 16.
Who uses EN 4500-001:2026?
EN 4500-001:2026 is used by the people who draft aerospace metallic material standards and by the people who apply them. That includes ASD-STAN and CEN committee members, material specifiers, manufacturers, purchasers, and test laboratories.
In practice, it supports:
- authors of EN 4500 series parts for aluminium, magnesium, heat resisting alloys, titanium alloys, steels, and filler metals
- manufacturers of aerospace semi-finished products
- purchasers who need a consistent material specification
- laboratories performing tensile, hardness, shear, bending, impact, and creep tests
- qualification planners working with line 100 and related technical specifications
What changed in EN 4500-001:2026 from the previous edition?
The foreword states that prEN 4500-001:2025 will supersede EN 4500-001:2024 and lists these changes:
- Table 1 was made monolingual by removing the French and German columns
- lines 4.3 “Further intended processing” and 5.2 “Dimensional standard” were added
- introductory sentences were added to Table 1 in Subclause 4.7.1 to show that it is a normative element and that all listed documents shall be applied
- titles were added to Table 1, Table 2 and Figure 1
- the document was restructured and the template simplified into a single continuous table
Which standards are used with EN 4500-001:2026?
EN 4500-001:2026 cites these documents in Clause 2 and related text:
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| EN 2002-001 | Tensile testing at ambient temperature |
| EN 2032-2 | Coding of metallurgical condition in delivery condition |
| EN 4258 | General organization of standardization and links between types of European standards |
| EN 4259 | Definition of general terms |
| EN 4500-002 to EN 4500-006 | Specific rules for the different material families in the EN 4500 series |
| ISO 80000-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -10 | Quantities, units and symbols used for drafting and presentation |
| EN 2043 | General requirements for semi-finished product qualification |
| ASTM E399 | Additional reference for Charpy impact test directions |
What does the EN 4500-001:2026 document contain?
EN 4500-001:2026 contains the drafting template and the rules needed to complete a material standard for aerospace metallic materials. Annex A gives the full template for Table 1, including the mandatory lines for identification, composition, delivery condition, tests, notes and product qualification.
Annex B assigns the numbers used for optional lines such as microstructure, fatigue, corrosion, density, weldability, and other special characteristics. The main text also includes Table 2 for direction symbols and Figure 1 for completing optional lines.
The document is therefore used when preparing, checking, or interpreting aerospace metallic material standards, especially where consistent testing, qualification, and presentation of requirements are needed.
