Overview

EN 1266:2002/A1:2005 is a CEN draft amendment to the European standard EN 1266:2002 covering independent gas-fired convection heaters incorporating a fan to assist transportation of combustion air and/or flue gases. The amendment updates normative references and introduces technical changes resulting from formal vote comments. It supports essential requirements of EU directives and clarifies construction, electrical safety, operational tests and marking for fan‑assisted gas convection heaters (type B and type C appliances).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose

    • Applies to independent gas‑fired convection heaters with fan-assisted combustion air and/or flue gas transport.
    • Amendment updates references and modifies test and construction clauses.
  • Updated normative references

    • EN 161:2001, EN 298:2003, EN 437:2003, EN 60335-1:2002; added EN 50165:1997 for electrical equipment of non‑electric appliances.
  • Constructional requirements

    • Improved accessibility/maintenance: removable parts must be easy to reassemble and misassembly must be obvious.
    • Type B outlet socket/adaptor insertion depth clarified (D‑2 mm pipe insertion distances for horizontal and vertical connections).
    • Removable injectors/restrictors must carry indelible identification.
    • Electrical equipment must comply with EN 50165:1997 to obviate electrical hazards.
  • Ignition and controls

    • New clause allowing direct ignition of main burner under defined conditions (automatic ignition or ≤4 kW heat input during ignition).
    • Automatic burner control and valve system references updated (EN 298:2003, EN 161:2001).
  • Operational and safety tests

    • Revised procedures for interruption, fluctuation and restoration of auxiliary energy (safety shutdown or compliance with clause 6.5.7).
    • Air proving device exemption note for type C appliances ≤6 kW if clause 6.11.5 is met.
    • CO concentration limits and sampling procedures refined-use of arithmetic means of the nine highest CO values for certain tests.
  • Test methods and wind/spillage tests

    • Wind test speeds adjusted (e.g., 2.5 m/s and 12.5 m/s) and sample/position selection procedures clarified.
    • Spillage monitoring tests for fan‑fitted appliances carried out with fan both ON and OFF.
  • Marking and documentation

    • Updated references to EN 60335-1:2002 for electrical supply symbols.
    • Updated gas type symbol table and guidance for labelling multi‑gas adjustment scenarios.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of gas‑fired convection heaters (design, production, conformity).
  • Testing and certification laboratories performing type and safety tests.
  • Product safety and compliance engineers ensuring conformity with EU directives.
  • HVAC specifiers, installers and maintenance personnel referencing construction, marking and maintenance guidance.
  • Regulatory bodies and notified bodies assessing appliance compliance.
