1 Scope
This International Standard specifies specimen dimensions, testing equipment and the procedure for torsion testing of resistance spot welds with single sheet thicknesses ranging from 0,5 mm to 6,0 mm in steels. It can be used for non-ferrous materials in certain circumstances.
The aim of this International Standard is to determine the weld diameter and the failure type of fractured specimens, and to evaluate the influence of different steel types, welding parameters and other factors on the deformation characteristics of a resistance spot weld.

Diese Internationale Norm legt Probenmaße, Prüfeinrichtung und Prüfverfahren für Torsionsversuche an
Widerstandspunktschweißverbindungen mit Einzelblechdicken im Bereich von 0,5 mm bis 6,0 mm an Stählen
fest. Sie kann unter bestimmten Umständen auch für Nichteisenwerkstoffe angewendet werden.
Das Ziel dieser Internationalen Norm besteht in der Bestimmung des Schweißpunktdurchmessers und der
Bruchart an gebrochenen Proben und in der Bewertung des Einflusses der verschiedenen Stahlwerkstoffe,
der Schweißparameter und anderer Faktoren auf die Verformungsfähigkeit einer Widerstandspunktschweißverbindung.

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifie les dimensions des éprouvettes, le matériel d'essai et le mode
opératoire pour les essais de torsion des soudures par résistance par points d'une même tôle d'acier d'épaisseurs
comprises entre 0,5 mm et 6,0 mm. Dans certains cas, elle peut être utilisée pour les métaux non-ferreux.
L'objet de la présente Norme internationale est de déterminer le diamètre de la soudure et le type de rupture des
éprouvettes rompues, et d'évaluer l'effet des différents types d'acier, des paramètres de soudage et d'autres
facteurs sur les caractéristiques de déformation d'une soudure par résistance par points.

Ta mednarodni standard določa mere vzorca, opremo za preskušanje in postopke za torzijsko preskušanje uporovnih točkovnih zvarov z debelino ene plasti jekla od 0,5 mm do 6,0 mm. V določenih okoliščinah se lahko uporablja za neželezne materiale. Cilj tega mednarodnega standarda je določiti premer zvara in vrsto napake poškodovanih vzorcev ter ovrednotiti vpliv različnih vrst jekla, premerov zvarov in drugih dejavnikov na deformacijske značilnosti uporovnih točkovnih zvarov.

This document (EN ISO 17653:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44 “Welding and
allied processes” in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 121 “Welding” the secretariat of which is
held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2012, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by November 2012.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

This document specifies quality levels of imperfections in fusion-welded joints (except for beam welding) in all types of steel, nickel, titanium and their alloys. It applies to material thickness ≥ 0,5 mm. It covers fully penetrated butt welds and all fillet welds. Its principles can also be applied to partial-penetration butt welds.
Quality levels for beam-welded joints in steel are presented in ISO 13919-1.
Three quality levels are given in order to permit application to a wide range of welded fabrication. They are designated by symbols B, C and D. Quality level B corresponds to the highest requirement on the finished weld.
Several types of loads are considered, e.g. static load, thermal load, corrosion load, pressure load. Additional guidance on fatigue loads is given in Annex B.
The quality levels refer to production and good workmanship.
This document is applicable to:
a)       non-alloy and alloy steels;
b)       nickel and nickel alloys;
c)        titanium and titanium alloys;
d)       manual, mechanized and automatic welding;
e)       all welding positions;
f)         all types of welds, e.g. butt welds, fillet welds and branch connections;
g)       the following welding processes and their sub-processes, as defined in ISO 4063:
—     11 metal arc welding without gas protection;
—     12 submerged arc welding;
—     13 gas-shielded metal arc welding;
—     14 gas-shielded arc welding with non-consumable tungsten electrode;
—     15 plasma arc welding;
—     31 oxyfuel gas welding (for steel only).
Metallurgical aspects, such as grain size and hardness, are not covered by this document.

Besides its conventional meaning, “pipe”, as used in this document, covers other cylindrical bodies such as tubes, penstocks, boiler drums and pressure vessels.
This document specifies the requirements for digital radiographic X- and gamma-ray testing by either computed radiography (CR) or radiography with digital detector arrays (DDAs) of the welded joints of metallic plates and tubes for the detection of imperfections. It includes manual and automated inspection with DDAs.
Digital detectors provide a digital grey value image which can be viewed and evaluated using a computer (Annex E). This document specifies the recommended procedure for detector selection and radiographic practice. Selection of computer, software, monitor, printer and viewing conditions are important, but are not the main focus of this document. The procedure specified in this document provides the minimum requirements for radiographic practice which permits exposure and acquisition of digital radiographs with equivalent sensitivity for the detection of imperfections as film radiography (specified in ISO 17636-1).
This document does not specify acceptance levels for any of the indications found on the digital radiographs. ISO 10675 provides information on acceptance levels for weld inspection.
If contracting parties apply lower test criteria, it is possible that the quality achieved will be significantly lower than when this document is strictly applied.
