EN 509:2024/FprA1 is a CEN draft amendment to EN 509:2024 for decorative fuel-effect gas appliances. It updates the European standard for appliances with a nominal heat input not exceeding 20 kW, covering construction, safety, marking and test methods for decorative gas fires used for appearance rather than space heating.
The document applies to appliances that simulate a solid fuel fire, use a natural draught burner with or without an ignition burner, and burn one or more combustible gases from the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437:2021. It also supports conformity work for Type BAS appliances, canopy-installed appliances, and the special national or type-specific conditions listed in its annexes.
What does EN 509:2024/FprA1 specify?
EN 509:2024/FprA1 specifies amendments to the requirements and test methods in EN 509:2024 for decorative fuel-effect gas appliances. It keeps the focus on construction, safety, marking and type testing, while updating references and several detailed test and marking clauses.
The scope keeps these appliances distinct from heating appliances. It also excludes catalytic combustion appliances and appliances that use mechanical means to supply combustion air or remove combustion products. The note on energy use matters in practice because the standard is written for decorative performance and safety, not energy-efficiency claims.

| Annex ZA | Relationship with EU-Regulation 2016/426/EU and its conformity mapping |
What are the key requirements of EN 509:2024/FprA1?
Construction and durability
Clause 5.1.2 adds a condensation-related construction requirement. If condensate forms during start-up or normal operation, it must not damage the appliance or its materials in a way that affects safety, and it must not drip outside the appliance.
That matters for enclosed decorative gas fires, because moisture can appear during ignition and steady operation. Manufacturers need to show that materials, joints and drainage paths remain safe under those conditions.
Clause 5.1.7 also updates the electrical equipment reference to the newer EN IEC 60335-2-102:2024. In practice, this aligns the appliance standard with the current electrical safety document used for gas, oil and solid-fuel burning appliances with electrical connections.
Test methods and measurements
Clause 6.6.3 changes the way oxides of nitrogen are measured. The standard now requires measurement of NO concentration in the air-free, dry products of combustion when tested under 7.7.4, and the earlier table in that clause is deleted.
Clause 7.7.4 revises the NOx test procedure. The test is run under the conditions in 7.1.5 using the reference gas or gases at normal pressure, and the NOx result must be recorded in the appliance test report. That makes the emissions record part of the formal type-test documentation.
Clause 7.1.4 updates how test pressures are handled, and 7.7.1 and 7.7.2.2 update the tables used for neutral combustion and incomplete combustion gas. For laboratories, that means the pressure and combustion checks must be carried out against the revised table structure.
Marking and identification
Clause 8.1.1, 8.1.3.1 and 8.1.3.2 update marking and electrical-supply references, including the way the type of gas is identified. The type-of-gas marking must use the symbol of the reference gas common to the relevant category indices.
In practice, this helps avoid incorrect product identification on the appliance label and in installation or certification documents. It also keeps the appliance marking aligned with the revised gas and electrical references.
EU conformity link
Annex ZA maps the standard to Regulation 2016/426/EU on appliances burning gaseous fuels. For manufacturers and conformity assessment bodies, this annex shows which clauses support presumption of conformity when the standard is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.
What terms does EN 509:2024/FprA1 define?
- Appliance - a decorative fuel-effect gas appliance within the scope of the standard, with a nominal heat input up to 20 kW.
- Type BAS - an appliance designed to be installed within a non-combustible builder's opening or a non-combustible fireplace recess.
- Type BBS - a separate appliance type covered by additional requirements in Annex F.
- Natural draught burner - a burner that operates by natural draught rather than mechanical air supply.
- Reference gas - the gas used for classification, adjustment or testing, including the gas symbol required for marking.
- NOx - oxides of nitrogen, measured during the combustion test and recorded in the test report.
- Category I2E+ - a gas category mentioned for the Belgian national conditions in Annex C.
Who uses EN 509:2024/FprA1?
EN 509:2024/FprA1 is used by manufacturers of decorative gas fires, product designers, and test laboratories that type-test appliances for safety, emissions and marking. It is also used by certification and compliance teams preparing technical files and test reports for market access.
Buyers, specifiers and quality managers use it to check whether a product is intended for a builder's opening, a fireplace recess or a canopy installation, and whether it falls under the special conditions for Belgium, Switzerland or Type BBS appliances. That helps them choose the right product variant and documentation for the intended market.
What changed in EN 509:2024/FprA1 from the previous edition?
EN 509:2024/FprA1 updates the base standard EN 509:2024 by revising key references and several technical clauses. The amendment:
- replaces and updates references to EN 125:2022, EN IEC 60335-1:2023 and EN IEC 60335-2-102:2024;
- adds a new condensation requirement in 5.1.2;
- revises the NO and NOx measurement provisions in 6.6.3 and 7.7.4;
- updates test-pressure, combustion and cold-condition table references;
- updates marking and gas-identification clauses;
- adds informative Annex ZA;
- updates the Bibliography with CEN/TR 1404:2024.
Which standards are used with EN 509:2024/FprA1?
- EN 437:2021 - gives the gas families and pressures used to identify the applicable combustible gases.
- EN 125:2022+A1:2024 - is the referenced standard for flame supervision devices and the non-automatic burner system references.
- EN IEC 60335-1:2023 - provides the general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances used in the electrical parts of the appliance.
- EN IEC 60335-2-102:2024 - provides particular requirements for gas, oil and solid-fuel burning appliances with electrical connections.
- CEN/TR 1404:2024 - gives details for NOx measurements during type testing.
What does the EN 509:2024/FprA1 document contain?
EN 509:2024/FprA1 is a clause-by-clause amendment document. It revises the normative references, construction requirements, electrical equipment provisions, flame supervision device references, burner-system references, emissions measurement clauses, test pressures, combustion-test clauses, cold-condition testing, marking, electrical supply identification and gas-type marking.
It also adds informative Annex ZA for the link to EU-Regulation 2016/426/EU and updates the Bibliography to CEN/TR 1404:2024. The amendment changes the table numbering used in the test clauses, so laboratories and compliance teams need to read it together with the base standard when preparing type tests and appliance documentation.
